What Happened to Hide From Tokyo Ghoul (Toukyou Kushu)? [Theory Proved]
Hideyoshi Nagachika is one of the supporting characters in Tokyo Ghoul. He is the childhood best friend of the main protagonist, Ken Kaneki. Although, he appears only a few times, Hideyoshi plays a major role in the development of Kaneki Ken's character. Hideyoshi’s nickname is Hide. His debut in the Tokyo Ghoul manga was in chapter 1 and in the Tokyo Ghoul anime episode 1.
After Kaneki had an organ transplantation surgery and became a ghoul, he got involved with Nishio Nishiki, who is also a ghoul. Nishio attacked Hide, making him unconscious and Kaneki tried to save him, but failed. They get rescued by Touka Kirishima, who brings the two of them to Anteiku.
Without anyone knowing, Hide listened to Kaneki and Yoshimura's conversation in Anteiku and found out that Kaneki is a ghoul, but he remained silent.
While Kaneki was cooperating with Shuu Tsukiyama, Kazuichi Banjou, Hinami Fueguchi and the rest, Hide worked for the CCG as a delivery boy. During the Owl Suppression Operation, Hide disappeared and his whereabouts are currently unknown.
In the following text we will talk about:
Moment of disappearance
Sasaki's present - the book
Hide reported as missing
Hide's new identity
Tokyo Ghoul:re and Hide
Hide's whereabouts and Great Wheel Act
Hide's role in the story
Hide's association with other people
Appearance during crucial moments
Hide and Anteiku
Moment of Disappearance
The last time Hide was shown was in Tokyo Ghoul manga chapters 136 and 137.
At that time, Hide was working for the CCG as a delivery guy and he got involved in their investigations after mentioning that Kaneki Ken is his friend. But, he was actually using the CCG in order to find out about Kaneki's whereabouts, so he could bring him home after he disappeared.
While everyone was fighting during the Owl Suppression Operation, Hide left the CCG and went to search for Kaneki. After he found him, Hide came to Kaneki and told him that he knew everything about him becoming a ghoul. He accepted him for what he is and suggested that they return home together. But after that, everything became black and in the next chapter, Hide was already gone.
Afterwards, when he came to his senses, Kaneki said that he felt the taste of blood in his mouth and because of that everyone thought that Kaneki (in his Kakuja state) ate Hide. Especially after the last episode of the Tokyo Ghoul anime.
In the anime version of Tokyo Ghoul, the ending is a bit different. Here, Kaneki encountered Hide in Anteiku, where Hide admitted that he knew about him being a ghoul long ago. After their long awaited reunion, Hide collapsed on the ground, saying that he "screwed up a little". That is when Kaneki noticed an injury on Hide's stomach. The next scene in the anime shows Kaneki carrying Hide's dead body as he walked towards Arima Kishou. The anime ends with Kaneki standing before Arima, waiting for him to kill him. But, the anime doesn't follow the manga completely, so it can't be considered cannon.
Hide reported as missing
At the end of the Tokyo Ghoul manga, after the Owl Suppression Operation, there was a list of injured, killed and missing people.
Suspiciously, the only person reported as missing was Hide, while Amon and Takizawa, even though their bodies weren't found, were reported as killed. I find this to be very strange and unneeded, but for some reason, Ishida Sui decided to make it that way.
This lead me to believe that there might be more behind Hide's disappearance and that the fact that Kankei ate may not be true, despite the strong indications we get in the manga for that.
Tokyo Ghoul:re and Hide
In Tokyo Ghoul:re there was no mention of Hide or Kaneki. The manga starts with a CCG investigator called Sasaki Haise, who works at the Quinx (QS) squad, as their leader. Sasaki, who is in fact Kaneki, doesn't remember anything about himself or the people from his past. The only clue he got is a gift for his birthday in Tokyo Ghoul:re side chapter 31.5. He got a book, Takatsuki Sen's "The hanged man's macguffin", that was signed: "To Ken Kaneki".
It is not known who sent the book, but I have a theory that Hide is the one who sent it and, therefore, is still alive. I believe that despite the small amount of appearances, Hide is one of the most important characters in Tokyo Ghoul, especially when it comes to Kaneki and his mental issues.
The role Hide plays is just too big, and he is always the one that ends up bringing Kaneki to reason. Also, note that Hide appears only during crucial moments, when Kaneki is about to break down or is mentally unstable. After that, the story always takes another unexpected course, such as Kaneki becoming the One-Eyed King.
Here is the theory:
Sasaki's present - the book
The only two people who bought that book are Kaneki together with Hinami, and Hide by himself.
After Kaneki was tortured by Jason and his hair turned white, he formed a group together with Tsukiyama Shuu, Banjou, Hinami and others. When the day of Takatsuki Sen's book signing came, Kaneki went there together with Hinami. There, Takatsuki Sen (better known as the one-eyed ghoul Eto) asked for his name. He only told her his surname Kaneki, therefore she wrote "To Kaneki-san".
But, the book that he got in Tokyo Ghoul:re chapter 31.5 was signed "To Ken Kaneki" and was a gift for "his" birthday.
Later that day, Hide asked Takatsuki Sen (Eto) to sign the same book for his friend KANEKI KEN! Hide knew that Takatsuki Sen was Kaneki's favourite author and that he enjoyed reading her works. He wanted to buy that book for him, get it signed and give it to him as a present when he gets back. Unfortunately, Hide never got the chance to do that in the Tokyo Ghoul manga.
If you think that Hinami could have sent it, she was in Cholea (special prison for ghouls) at that time, so that excludes her. Tsukiyama Shuu, even though he was in the same group as Kaneki and Hinami at that time, could not have sent the book, because he didn't even know that Kaneki was alive (that Sasaki was actually Kaneki). He only found that out in Tokyo Ghoul:re chapters 37 and 38, but the book was sent in chapter 31.5.
No one from Anteiku could have sent the book to Sasaki either, because they don't know that Hinami and Hide bought the books. Also, they respect Touka's wish to leave Sasaki alone and not mention anything about his past to him.
Also, Eto could have been the one who sent it, but the main reason why I believe she was not the one is because of the purpose of the gift. Surely, Eto has tried to revert Sasaki back to Kaneki (and succeeded in the end), but this was not part of her plan. The book was meant as a birthday gift and I doubt that Eto knows when Kaneki's birthday is. Therefore, the only person who remains is Hide. It is only logical that the book Sasaki got was from Hide.
Who sent Sasaki the book?
Hide's new identity
Now, taking into consideration that Hide is actually alive, we get a new question. Where is he, and how come no one knows that he is alive? There is just one answer, and it's that he changed his identity, more precisely, he is hiding his identity and acting as someone else. But who?
There are two possibilities: he is either with humans, or he is with ghouls. If it was the first one, then I believe that someone would have known that he's alive, and he wouldn't have been reported as missing. But, if it were the second one, no one would be able to find him, moreover, they would believe that he died. I believe that right now, Hide is acting as a ghoul even though he isn't one, that he continued his investigation of the ghouls, and is trying to help Kaneki from the shadows. So far in the story, there has been only one ghoul who would fit in with these statements - the ghoul Scarecrow.
Scarecrow was first seen during the Auction Raid arc in Tokyo Ghoul:re chapter 17. He was in the audience, and the panel shifted the attention to this ghoul without any known reason, implying that he is important to the story. Any monologue he makes is only translated as a bunch of unrelated symbols, but this could just be to cover up the way the character speaks, since Hide has a distinctive way of speaking which is easily noticeable. Later, Scarecrow is shown in, what I suppose is the control room. He accidentally pushed some of the buttons which caused the streaming of Sasaki and Takizawa's fight. Either way, what was a ghouls like Scarecrow doing there, and why did he get so much screen time if he isn't important?
Luckily, this was not the last time he appeared. He was also present during the Rue Island arc in Tokyo Ghoul:re chapter 61, when the CCG ambushed Aogiri Tree. Scarecrow was noticed by Mutsuki, who questioned what a C-RANK STRAY ghoul would do in a place like that, and we know for certain that he wasn't a part of Aogiri Tree.
First of all, the fact that Scarecrow is a C-rank ghoul is important. If Hide was acting as a ghoul, I doubt that he would go around eating and killing other ghouls or humans, thus why he is only C-rank. Moreover, he is a stray ghoul, meaning that he doesn't belong to any ghoul organization, which would also make sense, because Hide wouldn't join any of them. Also, to hide the fact that he is human, he wears that mask which covers up his whole head. The reason why he was on Rue Island will be discussed later in the text.
Scarecrow appears in Tokyo Ghoul:re chapter 111 as well. This time, Amon remembered that he met this ghoul, though his identity still stays hidden. While Amon was under the control of Kanou and unable to escape from Kanou's experiments, Scarecrow appeared and got rid of Amon's guards so he could escape. There is no doubt about it. Scarecrow was the one who saved Amon. Also, you can notice that he knows who Amon is and aimed to rescue him specifically. That is one more reason to believe that Scarecrow is Hide. Hide was the one working under Amon and Akira for a certain period of time. That explains how Scarecrow knows Amon and why he rescued him in the first place. He may also be the one who brought Amon to Rue Island, thus the reason why Scarecrow was there.
In Tokyo Ghoul:re chapter 138, Scarecrow revealed that his real identity was Hideyoshi Nagachika aka Hide. With this, most of the theory seems to be correct, but we still don't know how he survived or where he was this whole time, so there are still parts of this theory left unproved and unanswered. Of course that is if we take into account that this is really Hide, since his face was not yet shown.
Do you believe that Hide is alive?
In chapter 148, after his identity was revealed, Hide stated the reason for being in the Auction House and on Rue Island. He was watching, searching if there was someone who could help Kaneki and whether he had the insurance he needed, probably alluding to the Washuu's not being in the way anymore, since they wanted Hide gone.
In chapter 164 of Tokyo Ghoul:re, he also confirmed that he was indeed the one that sent Sasaki / Kaneki Takatsuki's book. He even went as far as to show Kaneki his face and the consequences of what Kaneki had done to him. With this, we can easily conclude as to what actually transpired that day of the fight with Arima in V14. As it appears, Kaneki was aware or at least suspecting that Hide was alive due to the lack of his surprise or shock after finding out.

Hide's whereabouts and Great Wheel Act
Let's say that all of the previously mentioned things are true. So, how did Hide manage to survive this whole time on his own?
Very simple. He is not alone, more precisely, he is part of a certain organization - Great Wheel Act. But before I come to that, let me remind you who Ogura is and what he has got to do with any of this.
Ogura is a researcher who studies ghouls and their behavior. If you remember, he was mentioned at the beginning of Tokyo Ghoul. He was on the news several times, explaining what ghouls are and how they live.
Later, you get to see how Hide started getting more and more interested in Ogura's work to the point he even bought and read his book. But, how is this connected to the theory? In Tokyo Ghoul:re chapter 102, it was revealed that a certain organization exists - Great Wheel Act.
Great Wheel Act is a group which supports ghouls. It is one of the groups which follow Eto's legacy. All this time, they have managed to survive as an organization without breaking the counter-measures law, and they even have their own medical team. But there is one catch, the group consist of humans as well, and the member that Kaneki meets is none other than Ogura!
I believe that Hide is part of that organization, since he admired Ogura's work and followed his ideology.
Please note that Ogura is supporting ghouls, which could also be noted when Eto revealed that she's a ghoul. He was one of the people fighting for ghoul rights at that time. It would only make sense for Hide to be a part of Great Wheel Act, since he shares the same belief.
As for how he was able to get there, there are several possibilities. Hide could have found a way to contact them himself. First of all, the Great Wheel Act was founded on student activities. The ones that first formed this organization where just students, but here is the important part: these students were from Kamii University. As most of you may know, Hide was also a student from Kamii University, so the possibility of him being able to get in touch with them is really high. Ogura even stated that the founder was a woman who was in love with a ghoul which point towards Kimi, Nishiki's girlfriend (Nishiki's reaction partly confirms this), and she was acquainted with both Kaneki and Hide.
But there is also another possibility how it may have happened: After Hide talked with Kaneki, he offered Kaneki to eat him, which Kaneki may have done, but he only ate the amount which was enough for him to recover. After that, he lost consciousness. During that time, Hide left. He tried to get out of there, so he wouldn't be in the way, and so Kaneki wouldn't feel bad about what happened. But, due to being injured (since Kaneki ate a part of him), he was not able to proceed very far. That is when the Great Wheel Act found him. They took him and healed him, and then Hide decided to join them.
The fact that Ogura may not say anything about that to Kaneki is simple as well. Ogura doesn't know that they are friends, thus he won't say anything. That way, Kaneki won't know that Hide is part of Great Wheel Act.
Even though Hide's connection with the Great Wheel Act is still in shadows, in recent chapter we can see his communication with Ogura and Kimi as well and how they work together in trying to stop the catastrophe which happened in Tokyo.
Hide's association with other people
In Tokyo Ghoul:re chapter 83, Marude briefly mentioned Hide's name after he confirmed that the V are indeed the Washuu. He stated that "it was just like you said, Nagachika", implying that Hide eventually found out the truth and reported it to Marude, his superior. The way he may have told Marude is with his will and not directly. Before the Owl Suppression Operation, every investigator had to write a will, and so did Hide. He agreed to write one, but we never got to see what was written. I doubt that it was for Kaneki, since he went to see him personally, it wasn't for anyone else we know, so it leaves Marude. In his will, Hide wrote of the conspiracy, and that the Washuu are in fact ghouls. Marude wasn't able to believe it, but still took it upon himself to investigate the case.
After that, Marude vanished and it was presumed that he's dead, but that is not true. Marude managed to escape, and the Washuu only used that situation to report that Marude died. The fact that Marude escaped can be concluded from the fact that his body was not found, which was later confirmed after Marude returned to the CCG.
Later on, we can clearly see Marude and Hide working together and, in some way, Marude taking orders and following Hide's plans. Now, Hide is the one who managed to bring together the CCG and the ghouls in order to fight together acting as the mastermind in the shadows.
