When You’re Young

Updated on April 17, 2017

I'm a writer, a poet, a dreamer. Born and raised in New York City. I live in the suburbs of Riga, Latvia. I have a wonderful cat named Sid.

Being young,

means that the stars are there for reaching.

They seem so much closer

and your dreams are just beginning.

The days seem to drift on endlessly,

time has no real meaning

and every road speaks of new adventure.

Some fairytales may hold lessons to be learned,

lullabies still sound sweet and soothing

and life is like an old Hollywood movie.

Life can be a comedy or tragedy,

first love consumes the heart with passion

and kisses the very sweetest.

First heartbreak,

can seem like the end of the world,

everything fading to gray and black.

Being young,

each day has something exciting to offer,

everyone you meet is a perspective friend,

hate or anger hasn’t grabbed a hold of your heart.

Love is still the stuff dreams are made of.

the world is full of hope

and wishes that might come true.

Being young,

life still seems to stretch till eternity.

The years can lazily drift by

and with every new thing -

you want to know why

and when these years all sail by -

always remain young at heart.

Thank you Shauna. Glad this brought you great memories. I agree with you there are days I feel as if I am back in my youth and then a nasty ache or pain brings me back to reality.

I'm still young at heart, Rasma. Now, if only my body would follow suit! LOL

I love this poem, Rasma. You brought back wonderful memories of the innocence of youth.

I agree with the old adage that youth is wasted on the young, but we can each celebrate the essence of youth in our lives, no matter the age. Lovely thoughts in this poem.

Idealistically oriented poem. Even aging can not limiting to stay young at heart. It begins by choosing and a decision making how young I would like to stay; In my case it counts twenty-nine years young, celebrating the fiftieth anniversary plus. Making melody in my heart ...

Yes, it's always best to stay young at heart. Although I'm in my 40's now, I still feel young inside.

Keeping all those positive aspects of being young, like curiosity, exuberance, and tolerance makes you less likely to notice the years flying by. You captured the sentiments well. I love the poem. Take care.

I love that. Staying young at heart in spite of the years is what makes growing old appealing. Beautiful poem in thought and form.
