The Writer's Block - A Poem

Updated on June 7, 2013

Writers Block

Source

An empty earthen vessel

Source

There's a drought up in my brain and I don't know how it got there
It seems that now my head is only filled with air.

Like an empty earthen vessel with nothing left inside
My thoughts and all my dreams have gone away and died.

There's nothing in my head my brain is all alone
I look and think and wonder, but it seems no one is home.

Source

Where thoughts once wandered freely I see emptiness
Just like an old time pauper, my brain is penniless.

Did monsters chase my thoughts away, or waves come from an ocean
To steal the thoughts I used to have and just leave blank emotion?

I sit and think and try to write but nothing comes anew
It's like I'm cooking without food, there's nothing for the stew.

Source

What strange and scary happening has caused this writer's block
Perhaps if I just sit here and stop looking at the clock

Some new and glorious thoughts will spring from somewhere deep inside
And words will fly like sparrows becoming now my guide.

The emptiness will fill itself like it never has before
The writer's block will leave me and I'll feel that old time lure.

Source

To write words with new meaning, the ones satisfying all my druthers
Words with feeling and appealing to all sisters, brothers, mothers.

To send away this writer's block as quickly as it came and
Start anew with glorious words that help to fan the flame

Of writing what I'm feeling when the urgings come to me
So I can see the finished work before the thoughts all flee.

Source

There's nursery rhymes and songs to write as each day begins
A finished work, no matter what, is how the writer wins.

So waiting for this block to end and go away for good
Is all this writer needs today don't be misunderstood

To see the words all flowing as you start to write them down
Is worth the world to writers, its better than a crown!

When you get writer's block;

See results

Thanks Audrey, a chuckle is always a good thing :)

Phyllis I think I may have to steal your idea and start a file, then I won't be penniless!

Bless you Frank, always so good to see you here.

Very clever, indeed, Mary. I enjoyed reading this poem.

"Where thoughts once wandered freely I see emptiness

Just like an old time pauper, my brain is penniless."

I often feel like that. When I am chock full of writing ideas, I start a file on each new thought for times when I am "penniless" -- it sometimes helps. hahaha

I find it interesting how the one thing I love about writing (poetry) and the thing I hate the most about writing (writer's block) are put together so wonderfully accurate. Thank you for sharing. I really need this.

When I saw this I laughed and had to comment as like yourself I wrote a funny similar poem last year when stuck with the block...enjoyed this and so identify with 'the harder we try the more evasive thoughts become'

      Great hub, voted up ++...cheers

This is such a great poem that I think all writers can relate to. I'm not sure all writers would be able to write a poem like this because of their writer's block. You did it tillsontitan! Voted up and awesome! I envy your talent. :)

Ignore it and it will come moiponetsoka. Sometimes the harder we try the move evasive the thoughts become. Hope a little rain falls your way.

I'm currently in stuck mode. While I realize this too shall pass, it still gets me down. However, it is comforting to know it happens to all of us. Thanks for sharing your inspirational poem. Makes me feel much better! Voted UP, useful and awesome!

Thanks Rosemay. Sometimes I think there's nothing in the world left to write about and out of the blue and idea pops into my head.

Well you sure came up with a good one to say you have writers block. Lol. Loved this well written and made me smile. Something will come along and inspire you when you least expect it.

I have the ideas, with me its just finding the time and getting my butt (or rather my fingers) into gear.

      Loved it and voting up

It would appear Aufait that you need to find more humorous poems to help drag you into poetry appreciation ;) Reading and analyzing day after day can make you tired of any type of writing!

Glad I could give you hope!

Took a class in English Lit a couple of years ago. Instructor turned out to be a poetry aficionado. Got an A in the class, but promised myself I would never read poetry again. Enjoyed poetry now and then before that class, but having to read and analyze poetry of every sort every day for weeks was not a favorite activity.

Have since read a couple of poems here on hubpages, this one of yours being one of them. The other one was excellent as is yours here. Not as painful as I thought it would be (reading poetry in general, not yours specifically), so perhaps the passing of time is improving my outlook. ;) I hope you will see the humor in my situation -- I'm beginning to, so hope is alive. I like your poem. Well written and very astute.

      Voted you UP and awesome!

I just went through this the other day for the first time since I joined HugPages; thankfully it lasted one day and it did just go away on its own once I had taken a break and a walk. Great poem.

Tillsontitan, I enjoyed this and am bang in the middle of a block at the moment - I can rattle off comments like there's no tomorrow but haven't had an 'idea' for a week now. Your poem rang lots of bells and I'm hoping this dry spell will pass soon. Voted up!

I'm working on that cadence Bob...block not beat yet.

No my GF, I'm not kidding. There's a block in my head but I'm working on it.

Thanks Rahul, I just might do that.

MovieMaster, you never have to worry about writing well...you always do.

Joan I hope you never experience it! Thanks for the encouragement.

TTombs, how right you are. Thanks for the confidence, now if I could just find an antibiotic to clear this up ;)

Beautifully flowing vocab and a wonderful poem!
