I saw you come to me, My Love,
Once in a midnight’s dream,
My head was laid upon my pillow,
And my eyes saw not this world,
T’was not a dream of love I dreamt,
But one of impending sorrow,
For in this dream I dreamt that night,
Our love would end tomorrow.
And when I woke upon the day,
Try as I might, I could not stay the hand
Of Fate which seemed to draw
All things to act my dream.
I could not cry, though in my heart
I saw love’s end in sight.
Instead, I stood in deepening sorrow
And tried to change my plight.
So fearful, I, to lose my love,
I strove the more to keep it,
Yet on the morrow I was alone,
So very all alone.
Time has passed, and now it seems,
I only thought I loved you,
For a memory is all you are to me,
Or are you a dream that came to me
Once in a midnight’s sleep?
