Why Libraries Are Essential To Us

Why Libraries Are Essential To Us

I love libraries. I have always enjoyed going to the library ever since I was a child. My mother would take me to the library once a week and every week I would come home with a huge stack of books. Even now that I am older I still go to the library once a week, and I still come home with a big stack of goodies.

A lot of people don't like the thought of going to a library because they have the idea that a library is just a stuffy, boring place. Well, libraries are no such thing. Libraries really are gems. For instance my local library has everything you can thing of, and even more. They have books, DVDs, CDs, e-books, and audio-books. Free events such as story time for kids, and book clubs for adults. At my local library they also offer free classes to help people of any age learn how to read. I think that is just awesome. Also, did I mention all of this is free?

I also believe that libraries are life savers. I know that may sound a bit dramatic to some of you but I really do believe that. I graduated high school right when the economy tanked and I did not have enough money to go to college at the time. When I moved to a new city with my boyfriend we barely had any money. We were literally hanging by a thread. We had barely had enough money for food and rent. We did not have any money for cable tv or internet. As a matter of fact we were "borrowing" wifi at the time from one of our friends who lived in the same apartment complex.

One of the first things I looked up online was where the local library was. Once I found it I walked over there and I have never stopped going since. Finding the library in my town was truly a blessing. When you don't have much money and want to further your knowledge the best you can, libraries are the place to go. I checked out so many books during those first few months I was in a reading frenzy. Reading all those books allowed me to escape all my worries during those hard times, it still helps too. I am grateful that I have been able to read all those books for free knowing that I never would have been able to do so without the library.

Another way the library also helped us was free entertainment. Our library has a large selection of DVDs you can check out. They also are pretty up to date with new releases as well so that's pretty awesome. Especially when prices for the movie theater are outrageous, why not take advantage of renting DVDs for free and have a fun night at home? We watched and still watch several movies and tv shows from there. We have discovered several new favorites through the library which we could not have done without it.

Our library also has CDs you can check out. I love this! I am obsessed with music so I think this is just wonderful. I like to listen to several types of music and this is a great way to discover a new artist for free.

The free WIFI that the library offers is wonderful as well. They have several computers to use, but you can also take your own laptop or tablet to access the internet as well. I think offering free internet is wonderful because it gives people the chance to access the internet when they might not have a computer or internet at home. I would always take my laptop to the library to pay bills online and to look for jobs online. Luckily with the help of the libraries free internet, I found my first job in town awhile later. The free internet at the library is a wonderful tool be it to check email, research a topic, or search for a job. I now have internet at home but I am grateful to know that if I ever need it, I have access to free internet at my local library.

I know it may sound like I am preaching but I just love libraries so much that I wanted to share with you everything that they offer. I know most towns have libraries and for the most part they offer everything that my local library does. If you have never been to your local library, I urge you to go. I know you will find something you love there. If you are a book lover, you can get lost in hundreds of amazing books. Even if you are not a book lover, remember they have DVDs and CDs. You have a chance to watch movies and discover new music for free! Or even if you just need to use the free internet the library offers. Remember libraries often do free activities for kids and adults as well. I am so grateful for the library, they offer so many wonderful resources for us to learn, and to grow. Take advantage of these wonderful resources the library offers. Our public libraries are there for us to use and it doesn't cost us a penny! Please support your local library! Trust me you will not be wasting your time.
