Why We Love Superheroes

Updated on May 6, 2010

Why Do We Love Superheroes?

Comic books were once viewed by society as something twelve year old boys would read over a can of soda-pop and a bag of cheetos, or a hobby for the overweight thirty something pocked faced fan-boys that still live in their mother's basements. But comic book characters and the superheroes and villains that fill their inked pages have jumped out of those kids backpacks and nerd's basements and into the mainstream of society. So what is it that makes movies about these comic book superheroes out preform other box office blockbusters from the past? What has it that has so attracted our minds to this phenomena known as the superhero? It is a longing...

These epic stories have given us spectacle and glamor enough to transcend the rungs of our ideas of acceptable and shown us all that we all long for a hero. Superhero movies, toys, cartoons, video games, and an entire genre of clothing and other merchandise have invaded our homes and made their way into our hearts. We love these stories because they show us that even in the face of ultimate evil there is always someone willing to take up the cause of good. In a world where the line between good and evil is gray because of politics and social complexities these worlds give us the straight black and white dichotomy that we all wish we had here in reality.

These heroes be they dark like Batman, or humorous like Spiderman give us something that we long for. They represent the goodness in all men, the hopes and dreams of mortals. They are like the gods of old, stories of epic adventure and heroism that once all men dreamed to be real. Some lost longing exists in our hearts for those amazement's to be fulfilled and the superhero genre has filled that missing place for us.

I love good writing and Marvel tends to do very well in this regard more so than DC.

I love Superheroes! Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman ... the "fight for justice and the American way!" Ah, and the Bionic Man! I think a great message was sent through these characters. Good will always triumph over evil. Of course, this was an idealism of the times. What we are talking about here is HOPE for humanity. Ultimately, we will strike evil down as long as "Good" perseveres.

Being a girl, I never did bother with those superheroes, but while reading this hub, I thought maybe you're actually explaining men to us. And that's always welcome.
