Winter's Dog

Thomas P. Barnett "Mid-Winter" 1929 | Source

By four-thirty the sun is down

and the winter sky

takes on the steely cold of night.

I take you out

for a walk

on one such night.

Your breath escapes before you

twin engines chugging.

You are joyous--

the excitement of possibility

that the night can offer you--

a cat under a car

a possum scurrying to safety

in a storm drain,

small eyes peering out.

I shove my hat further down

around exposed flesh

fingers deep into pockets

and so we go--

You, bounding into the night

Me, armored against it.

Thank you Epigramman! And thank you so very much for the share--you are generous that way and I will repay you in kind---I tend to tweet more often than use Facebook--you are so kind and supportive--and not just of me--but for many people here---thank you!

...in just a few well chosen lines of evocative words I painted a cinematic image in my mind's eyes - so visual is this piece for me and will find a home on my Facebook page with a direct link back here - some people would take an entire lifetime to write what you just did in such short and briliant order - they don't teach this at at poetry school they just dream about it!

Winter's Dog took me out into the cold night. It made me see the dog, the possum, the cat and the steamy breath of the dog drifting in the wind. I am now a fan, Audrey!

The wealth of positive comments atest to the poem's clarity and appeal. Don't worry about being funny, unless you were to have chosen what the dog's first priority in going out might have been...and that would be a different poem needing a lot of Kenneth's humor to write. Cheers!

Love this one. We live in the woods, and on cold days I stand on the deck and tell our dog, "Hurry up! It's so cold out here", but all she wants to do is explore all the sounds winter's wind sets off in the trees! :)

You caught the perfect essence of a late night walk with woman's best friend. My favorite line is about the dog bounding INTO the wind and cold while you bundle up even more against it. My shep/collie mix drags me out into te snow drifts too :)
