When Heroes Get Knocked Down: A Look At Some Of Wolverine's Toughest Moments
Wolverine Can Take A Beating And Come Back!!
The Essence of The Super-Hero Concept
Super-heroes are known for being able to “save the day!”. Whether it’s Spiderman, Batman, Superman, or super-heroines like Wonder-Woman, the first thing in the front of our mind when we think of them, tends be their innate ability to fix the biggest of problems and overcome the meanest of villains. Although, the idea of individuals who represent a panacea for a dangerous world filled with villains, is what tends to be the essential characteristic that dominates our view of super-heroes, there are of course other important characteristics that define our favorite super-heroes. One of these characteristics and probably one of the more important ones, is the necessary capability for a super-hero to get back up when they are knocked down. No matter how hard the fall or how painful the beating, a super-hero has to demonstrate the capacity to get back on the horse and persevere in order to earn the title “Super-Hero”!
Wolverine Can Take A Punch And Even Get Back Up After A Hard Landing!
One very, popular super-hero that is a great example of this particular attribute would be Marvel’s most popular mutant, Wolverine. This iconic character has fought through much pain, tragedy, and even personal torture through many pages of comic book history. However, through all of his tough and trying times, Wolverine has always been able fight back hard and achieve his own triumphs along the way. The following looks at some of Wolverine’s hardest hits and toughest challenges!
Cyclops Landing Some Hard Shots In His Rivalry With Wolverine!
One of the most notable rivalries (and entertaining) in the X-Men comics over the years has been between Wolverine and Cyclops. As the long time team leader of the X-Men, Cyclops has always represented somewhat of a structured, by-the-book approach to being a hero. Wolverine has of course always been a valued team-member in the X-Men, but at the same time he has never shied away from doing things his own way. This combined with one of the most famous love triangles (Wolverine, Cyclops and Jean Grey) has lead to allot of tension between the two head strong mutants, including physical conflict at times. Here are some instances were Cyclops really got the better of Wolverine!

Differences Don't Mean The Bad Guys Have An Advantage!
Despite there differences, Wolverine has always been able to move forward and work together as a team member with Cyclops when the situation calls for it.
Can Wolverine Handle The Cosmic Phoenix Force?
Wolverine Getting Burned By The Phoenix!
I mentioned Wolverine’s love interest (at times), Jean Grey, being at the center of some hard battles with Cyclops, but Jean herself, has also delivered some painful shots to Wolverine, while under the influence of the powerful, cosmic Phoenix force! Of course Wolverine was at much of a disadvantage not only due to the incredible power behind the Phoenix force, but also due to not wanting to hurt Jean, who he was in love with!
More recently during the Avengers vs X-Men crossover event, Wolverine was totally baked by the fiery forces of the Phoenix within Hope Summers. This was another complicated fight for Wolverine, due to the fact that he chose to fight on the side of the Avengers against his old co-workers the X-Men in order to rein in the Phoenix force. As you can see it definitely didn't go his way!
Wolverine Nailed To A Wooden X!
When Wolverine Was Beaten, Tortured, And Crucified!
One of Wolverine’s biggest beatings came at the hands of the mutant-cyborg group, known as the Reavers. After returning to X-Men headquarters, from a leave of absence in Madripoor, Wolverine was unable to find any of the other X-Men. Instead the Reavers took him by surprise in a brutal attack. Ultimately he was captured, tortured, crucified on a wooden X and left for dead. Wolverine eventually tears himself off of the wooden X and with Jubilee’s help escapes. Wolverine would later go on to get the better of different members of different members of the Reavers, including Lady Deathstrike.

The Future Death of Wolverine!
Though Wolverine’s healing factor and perseverance of will, helped him to live on for a later re-match, in the previous battles mentioned, this particular encounter ended up being lethal. In the “Days of Future Past” story, a dystopian alternate future is presented were mutants are hunted by powerful Sentinel forces and put into internment camps or killed. As comic fans would expect, Wolverine is not just going with the flow. Instead he is fighting alongside other mutant rebels. However, in the Uncanny X-Men #142 that fight comes to a decisive end, when a Sentinel hits Wolverine head on with a blast so strong that it leaves only his indestructible adamantium skeleton behind.

Wolverine Gets Abducted By A Secret Government Program And Has His Skeleton Fused With Unbreakable Adamantium!
Speaking of adamantium, this has always been one of Wolverine’s most valuable super powers. His unbreakable adamantium skeleton combined with razor sharp adamantium claws that can cut through anything have come in very handy, when fighting the many villains in the marvel universe. Wolverine didn’t always have his adamantium though, and the way he came by it was one of the most painful ordeals in all of comics. A secret government program known only as “Weapon X” abducted Wolverine and fused adamantium to his skeleton, but the procedure was very torturous and only his healing factor allowed him to survive. Although the objective (turning Wolverine into even more of superhuman weapon than he already was) ended up being successful from a technical standpoint, those behind the scheme would ultimately regret it. Wolverine awoke from his unconscious state after the procedure and leveled the whole secret facility, killing anyone who dared to stand in his way.

Wolverine’s Greatest Strength Also His Greatest Weakness?
Wolverine was forced to put his adamantium in, and little did he know he would one day have his adamantium violently, pulled out of his body! Though his adamantium has generally given Wolverine the edge in most conflicts, it has actually been a liability against the powerful, mutant villain, Magneto. Naturally, the Master of Magnetism has often used his control of magnetic fields to give Wolverine considerable problems in their confrontations. However, in the “Fatal Attractions” crossover, Magneto would do a lot more than just give Wolverine problems. In the heat of battle with the X-Men Magneto executed one of the most devastating attacks ever on Wolverine when he ripped every ounce of adamantium out of his body, almost killing him.
Maybe Wolverine Should Have Stayed On The Sidelines Against Magneto!
The Pain Was Just Beginning, Though!
The pain and suffering didn’t just end there, though. Wolverine had a long road ahead before fully recovering, as his healing factor was severely weakened. As usual Wolverine fought on, even without his fully functional regenerative healing factor and unbreakable, adamantium skeleton. He continued to take on all comers, including some of his deadliest villains like Lady Deathstrike and Cyber.
Hard Knocks Help To Define The Super Hero
Wolverine has been in plenty of tough spots and some very painful moments, but these have helped to define his iconic, Super Hero status!
