Is Work The Key To Happiness ?

Updated on March 2, 2014

Think Again

Each of our days begin when we open our eyes

Soon we are off to work

To pay for the bare necessities of life

Food on the table

Giving us a safe place to sleep and relax

Clothing to keep us warm

Then to have extra money to enjoy the fruits of our labor

A vehicle so we may have transportation to go where we need to go

As we fulfill each need we notice as more desires surface

Each one wanted so we can have the opportunity to live a happier life

For some it is nicer clothes

Jewelry or make up

A better home and more furnishings to give us more comfort

We gradually work more to save more

So we can have more

Travel more

Enjoy more luxuries and pleasures

Then work even more to keep up with our own demand of endless wants

Let's back up a step and review what we really need

Food ,shelter, clothes

We will have to add in affordable health care

Just in case we get sick or ill

Now we look at savings for our future

If we don't have the same job and have no income ?

How can we provide for us and our loved ones ?

So we seek a second job to keep up or as a back up just incase

Working long hours having less time for our family and friends

Even less time to enjoy all our conviences of life

Where did we go drastically wrong ?

Has work become our friend or our biggest enemy ?

Over time we spend more time in work than anywhere else

Except for sleeping

Do we trick ourselves into thinking working gives us great pleasure ?

Do we go to work to enjoy an activity we love and get paid providing for our needs ?

Have we come so far to say...

Work is our life

Something that fills our thoughts every waking hour of the day

When we are off from work do we think of when and what will happen at work when we go back ?

Is life a double edge sword ?

When we are at work do we count the days till we are off or able to go on our next vacation

To spend more money to push us to work even more in the future

So I ask you ?

Is your work your dream job ?

Something you always wanted to do ?

Your life's passion ?

Are you in love with work or just happy to have a job ?

So you can provide for all the things you do and don't need

manatita44 My father use to say whatever you do in life matters. No matter what job you hold you leave your personal stamp on it. So do everything with pride and the best you can. You never know where this job may lead. People respect people that have good qualities. Thank you for taking the time to comment and may your day be exciting and filled with endless beauty.

You raise useful questions. My Teacher used to say, wherever you work should be your heaven.

Well, having a great Team with you helps, but for me it's all about how I feel on any given day. Much, if not all of this, comes from the energy I draw in meditation, before I leave the house a.m. Yes, I do enjoy work, and mostly I do have a great day!!

Gypsy Rose Lee You keep making so many people happy doing what you do best. Times may be hard but it will be all worth it in the end. There is no greater passion than one who loves their life and the work they do. Thank you so much for reading and commenting.

Right now the work I do online content writing, my own blogging and writing poetry is what I really love. Loving what you do is great but then you have to be satisfied living hand to mouth.

Nadine May People look all their lives for a job that gives them a good income and the personal satisfaction of something they love to do. I am so happy for you. I also have been blessed with finding a job that I enjoy doing for many years.DDE That is my attitude exactly. You are right on target with every thought that keeps us positive and moving forward. Thank you both for your helpful comments.

      Hi DREAM ON.

Contemplative . Introduced in your poem basic necessities for life's needs and wants, question to " The key to happiness "- remained open. While work is a lifelong moral tie ( who refuses to work shall not eat )- happiness is a decision. As long as we live we "work" -keeping busy, being active makes us healthy, vital, sane - happy. ( Conclusion inherited from Wisdom.)

      Voted interesting.

I was lucky eventually to find a job I really enjoyed and I did that for 14 years until I retired. Before that I did work as a secretary for some great people. I guess I've been lucky. I know what it's like to have rotten jobs or no job at all, so I'm thankful I studied well enough to come up with something worthwhile.

Good questions in this thought-provoking and amusing poem. Ann

A good question. If our mind and heart is in the work we do , we, no doubt, get immense satisfaction and also happiness out of it. Otherwise, we are miserable and carry on just for the sake of survival and sustaining. However, there is one peculiar talent or special quality in us - if nurtured regularly, can bring out happiness in our heart and cheer our mind. A great Indian Philosopher Adi Shankaracharya also dwelt on this question. He was of the view that our relatives and friends support and love us till sufficient energy and vigor is present in us to fulfill their needs and wants. The moment we lose our strength and our youthful days are over and old age takes over us, everybody begins distancing from us. Not even this, then they are not even interesting in talking to us and we are left alone to fend for ourselves. All through our lives, we work hard to provide all kinds of goods, facilities , comforts, decent housing, lots of love to them; they desert us at a time when we need them the most. This is the way of the world and we are in such a great illusion of extracting happiness out of things/persons. This is our ignorance and we are really in darkness. The real happiness is to be found within us only- in the self and nowhere else ever. To know the self is to reside in ever eternal happiness. This is the sole objective of our whole existence. My friend, I was carried away too far but your words are so profound that I could not resist myself to assert this way. Maybe you could find a little bit of relevance of it to your wonderful and eternal question.

Everything you do in life i s a key to happiness it depends on how you look at it. If you enjoy work it will be worth doing.
