Would It Make a Difference?

Updated on July 24, 2013

Would it make a difference?

He wondered

If she didn’t love him

Didn’t care for him

As much as he wanted her

It seemed as if

She was constantly miles away

When he was whispering

Sweet nothings in her ear

Oh, their kisses were passionate enough

And her smiles the sweetest they could be

But there was something

Which he couldn’t understand

Her lips said I love you

But her eyes were empty

Deep in the night

He watched her sleep

And wondered who she was dreaming about

He knew that he would be lost without her

But to live being afraid

Of what tomorrow would bring

Froze his heart and made him scared

Came the day when he saw

Her laughing, her blue eyes twinkling

As they looked up at the man

Who wasn’t him

At first it didn’t seem to hurt

He’d known for awhile

That things in their world

Weren’t as they should be

So he crossed on over

And stood in front of the two lovers

Holding out his hand

For the woman who should be his

But she just shook her head

Grabbed onto the hand of the man beside her

And he stood and watched until they were out of sight

Funny in moments like this

For him there was no hate

No regret or anger

Just a feeling of betrayal

And somewhere deep inside

He wondered if it had been his fault

I immediately asked myself that question: would it make a difference if Bev did not love me? Duh! The answer is like asking if it would make a difference if there were no air. :) Beautiful, Rasma!

Another beautiful, beautiful poem. You take the everyday love stories that don't always end the way we want and write poems that make us sad and yet make us stop and think.

Voted up, useful, awesome, and beautiful!

There is that tragic moment in life when we would give anything to see them happy. That it is near relief when we lose them to another who does.

Epic story said with much grace, thank you.

It really is very lovely, this poem. Cleanly written and haunting as well! I enjoyed reading this! It reminded me of some of the themes that seem to haunt my writing as well, in other words, I can relate!

OMG..this touched me for reasons i cannot discuss...just know that it does. Deeply.

When love is uneven, power is shifted dangerously, and - someone always gets hurt!

Your scope is amazing, as is your grasp of human nature and fickle hearts!

      with love, my dear friend.

Oh my goodness, Gypsy Rose Lee! I can't believe how much I understand HIM! This was almost painful for me to read because I could feel the words pierce through my heart... but it was written so beautifully.

I love it! Even though it hurt a little :D

      Voted way up and beautiful.

I remember the night my first husband told me he was in love with someone else and was leaving. Like the man in your poem, I KNEW he did not love me months before he confessed the betrayal. You just KNOW.

You describe perfectly his anxiety and confirm how actions speak much louder than words.

When the one you love leaves you holding the hand of another, it is like your heart being ripped out...but I've learned it is better to let them go than try to hang on. It is worse to be with someone you know is thinking about someone else.

You put all of this into words in a phenomenal way. God bless, Sparklea :)
