X - A poem

Updated on May 7, 2012

I trusted you
I put my faith in you
Gave to you all my heart
I wanted you to understand how I felt
And be there with an open hand
I wanted you
I wanted you so badly
I could not see when I was blind
I waited for you
I waited until the flood almost swept me away
I called to you
I screamed at you
I hated you
Because you asked me to
And now I look for you
But the flood has covered up
Any trace of you that was left in view
No there is nothing I can do
About it

I came to you
I brought you all the treasures
I had locked away
I followed you
Every night and day I saw your light
And hoped that I could reach it
I ran to you
Then I would run from you
Now I am missing you
Though I try and try
To keep my mind from dwelling in the darkness
In the dungeons of the past
I know it won't last forever
It is such a long long time to waste
I loved you
I hurt you too
I tried to make amends
But it just severed all the fraying ends of our friendship
That were left in the fabric of our lives
Now I think of you
And I hope you think of me too

So many times I have run myself a-ground
Too many lines have I stood in with the crowds
So man lives I have battled in
And found that whatever
You are the victor or you are the loser
It never matters
Because both sides of the sword
Will leave you bleeding for more

I taught to you
And I learned from you
To practice what you teach
Because the test of time
Will ask you to repeat what you have not learned
To complete
I pray for you
I remember your words
Like a razor in the moonlight
They remind me to let it be
The way it has to be
I had forsaken you
I had rejected you
I have abused you
I have misunderstood my own words
I wish I knew what I know now
When I made the marks across my veins
When I buried my remains in my psychological tomb
Full of pity
Full of pain
Now I am gazing through you
Look at the glass
To pickup the shards of bone
That I left behind me
Back there at home
So that I can be free of all the burdens
All the troubles
All the uncertainties of what will come to be
Across love's great sea

I cherish you
Just having known you
Has meant the world to me
I say goodbye to you
And leave an X in the place and time
So maybe
Someday the circle will come complete

Poetic Notes and History on by Blake4d

X is a unique poem, in that it has nothing to do with my real life directly. Much of my writing is about actual people, events, or experiences I have had. There is always at least a bleed through of something from my reality. But this one was an imagined friendship. I tried to imagine what a friendship that was over a long lifetime might go through, different stages and initiations. In fact that is what it really is more about. The X is the friendship, the X is the changed persons in the equation, the X is what is missing in their lives, and the X is what they hope will someday be.

X is also the names that are missing from the tale being told. X marks the spot, X is where the treasures are buried and X is a Roman numeral signifying the power of 10 or the power of decades passing so fast. It is meant to feel like time passing by slowly yet rapidly. And leave you wondering what happened to all the time in the end. I am very proud of this piece.

So many X's. I add on the X-Factor and X for the missing link. Through my mind goes the saying that X marks the spot.
