Yesterday’s Shadows

I'm a writer, a poet, a dreamer. Born and raised in New York City. I live in the suburbs of Riga, Latvia with my hubby, Martin and cat Sid.

It was a nostalgic afternoon

and thoughts of daydreams were flying.

I was searching through some photos

and realized that they were,

but shadows of yesterday.

Looking at the dear faces and places,

for a moment it seemed -

that they began to move.

I saw the little girl I once was,

running, laughing and playing.

My mom and dad were waving,

from a place far in time.

The photos brought back fond memories,

of days that won’t come again.

It made me wonder,

how fantastic it would be -

to freeze moments in time,

upon a photo paper and have the action stop.

In today’s digital world,

we find ourselves uploaded

into a computer,

but the same is still true,

I can look at the pictures -

as they smile at me,

from the computer screen.

It seems like they were just taken yesterday,

bringing a fantasy to mind,

if the reflections we see

before us in the mirror -

are shadows of things -

that have just been.

In the blink of an eye,

are already a part of the past.

What a wonder it would be,

for perhaps a moment or two,

to step through the mirror,

to see if I could meet my past.

For a moment of loving reflection -

then to move on,

holding special memories,

deep in my heart

and let the shadows of yesterday,

rest until another time.

Moments of reflections, yes, they can be very special memories. Interestingly enough, it reminds me of Ruby's. Quite different, but yes, some reflections of the past.

Great Hub and charming music video.

I have pictures of love ones gone, wouldn't it be great if we could do as your poetry suggests? This is beautiful! Loved it...

      Thank you Manatita.

Thank you Ruby. Sometimes when I scan photos on my PC and then look at them on the big screen it does seem as if I could just step on in and see it all one more time.

Gypsy Rose Lee I closed my eyes as I read your poem and my past came alive vivid and clear. I could feel and appreciate it all. Now as I open my eyes I can live in this moment and realize if it wasn't for all the things before I wouldn't be here. Thank you for your wonderful thoughts. I always feel better after reading your poems. Have a great night.

Rasma, I love this! Wouldn't it be awesome to step into the photos and relive those moments? Just imagine how life would be if we could do that. It would be a wonderful cure for aging, Alzheimer's, cancer, loneliness, broken hearts and so much more.

Gypsy Rose Lee, I love you poem, but going back in time I would not want to do that. Yesterday is gone only the people I loved are mostly gone with yesterday's shadows.

Blessings and hugs my dear friend.

That is so true Shauna. I would love to be a shadow that could see the moments of my childhood once more with my parents.

Thank you Shyron. Blessings and hugs to you too.
