At a glance

Muhammed Zafar Iqbal, a familiar name in modern bangla literature. He is a famous writer of fiction, science fiction, children literature and column in newspapers. He wrote hundreds of famous books. His first publication is "Kopotronik Sukh-Dukkho", a science fiction. That was an wonderful start and later he introduced a new style of writing in the era of Bengali science fiction. He basically writes for the children. His children literature is playing a great role as the young readers enriching them to be perfect future citizen as they are getting proper moral education in disguise of fun. Besides those some film is made based on some of his writing. First film based on his book was Dipu No.2. He is a professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Sylhet, Bangladesh.

His Personal life

Muhammed Zafar Iqbal is from Kutubpur village in Mymensingh District. But he was born on 23 December 1952 in Sylhet. His father's name is Faizur Rahman Ahmed and mother is Ayesha Foyez. His father was a police officer and was killed by Pakistani Army during the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971. He spent his childhood in various places of Bangladesh mostly in Sylhet for his father's transferring job. His brother, Humayun Ahmed, the name itself is synonymous to modern bangla literature. He was the most famous novelist, dramatist, screenwriter, play-writer, Lyricist and filmmaker. Another brother, Ahsan Habib, is a painter and the editor of famous cartoon magazine Unmad. His wife, Dr. Yasmeen Haque is a scientist and is in teaching in the dept. of Physics of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology(SUST). They have one son - Nabil and one daughter - Yeshim.



Mohammad Zafar Iqbal passes SSC in 1968 from Bogra Zilla School, HSC in 1970 from Dhaka College and B.Sc in physics in 1976 from Dhaka University. Then he achieved PhD in 1982 from University of Washington.


Later Mohammad Zafar Iqbal joined at post-doctoral research at California Institute of Technology and worked there from 1983 to 1988. Then he worked as a research scientist in Bell Communications Research (Bellcore) up to 1994.

Then he returned Bangladesh and joined at the faculty of the Computer Science and Engineering department at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and later became the head of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering department in the same institution.

Md. Zafar Iqbal wrote lots of books mainly for the young readers such as science fiction and child literature/adventure. He also wrote and writing novels, short stories, column in news papers etc. He is just lighting lights for the new generation by his writing.

Mohammad Zafar Iqbal was awarded Bangla Academy Award in 2004. He was also awarded several awards for his writings. Moreover, he received Rotary SEED Award for contribution in the field of education.
