"A Southern Girl" - Original Fiction Based In South Carolina

If you are looking for a great read this summer, I would like to recommend A Southern Girl by John Warley. I was recommending this book even before it was released because I know the author and knew it had to be great. I definitely was not disappointed. How do I know the author? Well, let me tell you.

Several years ago my friend John Sitton told me about an old college buddy of his who had just published a book called The Moralist and he thought I might enjoy it. After reading this fun political satire, I just had to write a review. I contacted my friend's friend and asked him if he could share a picture of the cover and a picture of himself to use on my review. John Warley also graciously consented to an email interview which I used on my page. I soon felt like John Warley was my friend, too, even though we had never met face to face. We continued to correspond over the years along with our mutual friend, John Sitton and my sister Joan Adams.

I was thrilled when John told me that his latest book. A Southern Girl was chosen to be the first in the series of Story River Books published by the University of South Carolina Press. All of the Story River Books will be original fiction based in South Carolina. Another favorite author of mine, Pat Conroy , is the Editor-at-Large of this series.

John Warley let us know that he had a radio interview in nearby Clemson, SC on April 23. John Sitton and his wife Haley and another friend Annette Buchanan and I went to work to plan a "Meet The Author" Reception which was held at Annette's beautiful home, Boxwood Manor. I was finally going to get to meet John Warley in person. The reception was wonderful with over 60 friends included and I think everyone there is as anxious as I am for this book to be released. John told a little about himself and then read the preface of the book which left everyone wanting to hear more. John Warley explained that this story was inspired by his daughter but was not her story. John and his wife had two sons and then adopted an infant from Korea before having their third son. This is the story of an adopted Korean girl who grew up in beautiful, historic Charleston and becomes A Southern Girl. It is a story of international adoption, a story of "Southern Pride" and "Family Pride", a story of love on many levels and what we do for our loved ones but most of all it is a story of change and how these loveable characters deal with it and remain loyal to the ones they love.

A Southern Girl: A Novel (Story River Books)
A Southern Girl: A Novel (Story River Books)

It didn't take long for John Warley's wonderful characters in "A Southern Girl" to take on a life of their own. The more I read, the more I wanted to read and certainly did not want it to end.

3 Videos: John Warley Tells About "A Southern Girl"

Listen to John Warley tell about his newest book, A Southern Girl.

At our Meet The Author Reception, I was so impressed with how much John was enjoying the people in attendance. It is hard to be the center of attention but he genuinely wanted to get to know each person there. He wanted to hear their stories and made everyone feel very much at ease.

You will see what I mean when you view these three videos:

  • Part 1 of John telling about his new book and how it was inspired by his own daughter but explains that it is not her story.

  • Part 2 - John talks about writers that have inspired him and begins with his friend and fellow author, Pat Conroy. John Sitton, John Warley and Pat Conroy have been friends since their days at the Citadel.

  • Part 3 - John talks more about the book and that it is a story of family.

Part 2: John Talks About Writers Who Have Inspired Him

Part 3: John Warley Talks More About His Novel

John Warley's Other Books

More books by Author John Warley and I am now looking forward to his 4th one.

  • Bethesda's Child
  • The Moralist

These two books by John Warley are totally different and different from "A Southern Girl". I have enjoyed all three.

Bethesda's Child
Bethesda's Child

If you enjoy politics, law and the study of genetics, you will enjoy this book. I think John Warley might have some kind of special gift to be able to see into the future but I may be wrong.

The Moralist: A Tale of People and Events in Centerfield Texas during a Year Recently Concluded

I was laughing out loud while reading this book but then it really made me think and ponder.

Our Reception and Book Signing for Author John Warley

Our Reception for John Warley on April 23, 2014 was a fun time at the beautiful Boxwood Manor. John and Haley Sitton, Annette Buchanan, Doc and Nancy Hellams enjoyed hosting this reception for John. This was the first time I had met John in person even though we had been online friends for several years. We invited friends to come meet John and hear him tell about his new book that had not been released at this time. I think everyone left wanting to start reading the book right then.

I think John Warley truly enjoyed his first visit to historic Pendleton, SC. It was so wonderful for Annette to open her lovely home, Boxwood Manor, for the event. The next day John Sitton took John Warley on a tour of Pendleton and found the grave of one of his ancestors at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Annette and I met them for lunch at 1826 On The Green and enjoyed hearing about their adventure.

John returned to Pendleton on June 3, 2014 for a book signing held at Boxwood Manor from 5 to 7 pm.

John's website has a complete listing of his book tour so check it out at http://www.johnwarley.com

That sounds like a wonderful event and you finally got to meet the author you had interviewed, which was great in itself. I like the way you've introduced this author through your experience of him.

I love to read a book when I feel I have met new friends - and all of the characters in this book became my friends (or in some cases acquaintances!). Folks who love Charleston SC will totally enjoy all the Charleston descriptions!

This book -- AND author John Warley -- sound fascinating. Wish I was still in Pendleton and could meet him. I will watch for "A Southern Girl" to come out. I'm especially interested in the little Korean girl aspect of the story, as I have a new daughter-in-law who is Korean.

The Beach Boys had a hit song when John Warley & I were at The Citadel about California girls, but they obviously had never met "A Southern Girl"! Nancy, Joan, Annette & Haley all epitomize the gracious warmth & hospitality Southern girls are known for, and along with a host of other Southern girls... that was enjoyably evident at John's "meet the author" drop in. John Warley is a gifted writer & intellect housed in a warm, gregarious personality and wonderful sense of humor that makes him stand out as desirable interesting company wherever he goes! The attendees at his drop in saw & sensed John's true ilk and are anticipating his return on June 3rd and beyond! We are all excited for the opportunity to read John's book and give him "writer's cramp" at the signing. I'm confident John & "A Southern Girl" will be a huge success!

@JohnWarley: Thank you, John, and yes we do need to get Joan to Pendleton when you are here. Bruno says Hi!

Nancy, you have once again shown why you are the internet queen of Pendleton. Thank you for posting, and I have June 3 circled in red on my calendar. Not only do I want to return but I want to MEET JOAN! It seems like in an age when Bruno can take a cell phone call from Doc to get off the bed, we could figure out a way to get Joan to Pendleton.
