Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Series

Updated on October 29, 2014

The Anita Blake Book Series

The Anita Blake novels feature Anita as a hard-boiled detective with a twist. The crimes she solves deal with the preternatural and the supernatural. As a vampire hunter and executioner, she hunts vampires and other supernatural or magical beings (think werewolves, witches, and zombies) that have used their power to hurt humans. Armed with a gun, knives, and a few supernatural powers of her own, Anita Blake is one tough heroine.

The Anita Blake series is my favorite set of vampire books. Within the Anita Blake novels, author Laurell K Hamilton has created a fascinating and exciting world filled with magic and supernatural creatures. It is a fun series offering wonderful characters, a thrilling storyline, and fantastic reading enjoyment. I absolutely love Anita Blake and it is my hope that this page will introduce you to a new favorite as well.

On this hub, you will find an overview of Anita Blake, a list on all the ABVH books in the series, a description for each novel, and great links to sites where you can find out more about Anita Blake. I have also included lots of Anita Blake quotes, reader polls, and fun quizzes for your entertainment and participation.

I hope you will enjoy reading about Anita Blake here and that you will let me know what you think by leaving a comment in the guest book when you are done. Happy Reading!

Anita Blake - Vampire Hunter

Anita Blake Overview

Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake series is an alternate reality storyline, set in modern day Saint Louis, where vampires are not only real, they are legal citizens. They have families, jobs, and hobbies. Many of them own businesses, like Jean Claude, Master of the City. He owns several of the popular night clubs in town, including Guilty Pleasures and Danse Macabre.

Anita Blake is a federal marshal and vampire hunter. Her home base is Missouri, but as a vampire executioner, her badge allows her to cross state lines to catch the supernatural bad guys. There is no way to keep a vampire in jail, so if there is a vampire gone bad, it is Anita's job to take care of him, by stake, gun, or whatever means she deems necessary.

Also, Anita is a paid consultant for the police, or more specifically, the Regional Preternatural Investigation Team (RPIT or Rip It for short). They employ her knowledge of the supernatural to catch the monsters that are preying on humans, be it zombies, ghouls, lycanthropes (shapeshifters), or vampires.

Anita is also an animator with Animators Inc, meaning she can raise the dead. When animated, the dead are known as zombies. They are raised to verify wills, answer questions as witnesses in trials, etc. Anita raises the zombie, usually with judge, lawyers, and even a court reporter present, and when their business with the deceased is done, she puts him or her back to rest.

Along with her busy work schedule, Anita must also contend with her love life. With vampires, werewolves, and other male supernatural creatures all wanting her attention what is a girl to do?

This series is a sensational thrill and these are just a few of the reasons why I love Anita Blake. I highly recommend the Anita books to anyone who enjoys a few thrills and chills in their reading. The series is very witty and entertaining, and you will fall in love all with the wonderful characters involved in Anita's world.

Content Warning: While the Anita Blake series began with the storyline portraying mild sexual content, the latter half of the books contain very explicit scenes and language. This series is meant for mature audiences only. I would not recommend the Anita Blake books to any young adult or teen readers.

Note: Yes, that is Selma Hyeck you are seeing in the pictures. I think she would make a fantastic Anita Blake, don't you?

There's nothing like ruining the calm of a one-hundred-year old vampire to boost a girl's morale.

My Introduction to Anita Blake

My cousin is responsible for my obsession with the Anita Blake series. I admit it, it's all her fault! :) We share a love of reading (and reading taste) and we always check out the new additions to each other's bookshelves when we visit.

About 10 years ago, I was at her house and spotted a book in her collection called Club Vampyre. I have always had a thing for vampire stories, so I had to check it out. Being the great friend and cousin that she is, she let me borrow it. I took the book home and discovered the exciting world of Anita Blake.

To my surprise and enjoyment, Club Vampyre was actually three books in one - Guilty Pleasures, The Laughing Corpse, and Circus of the Damned. And while I did not know it at the time, they are the first three novels in the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series.

From the first chapter of Guilty Pleasures, I was caught up in Anita's world. I was enthralled. This was the type of novels that I had been searching for since my love of horror fiction began. By the time I had finished Circus of the Damned, I was thoroughly obsessed, and Laurell K Hamilton had gained a devoted fan.

I have since read the entire series and now order each new addition as soon as they are released. The Anita Blake Series is one of my favorite story lines and I hope you will enjoy it as well. There's lots more Anita Blake stuff on this page, so keep reading for more Anita fun.

Anita Blake Novels

Guilty Pleasures

A serial killer is murdering vampires and Nikolaos, Master of the City wants Anita Blake to solve the crime. Of course, Anita refuses. She doesn't work for bloodsuckers... but the vampires have a few tricks up their sleeve. At a bachelorette party for Anita's best friend Cassandra, a vampire bespells Cassandra. To break the spell and save her friend, Anita agrees to find the serial killer.

Anita is not only working for the vampires. The police have called her in as well. Some terrible creatures are slaughtering humans in there own homes. Anita must solve the crime before more people lose their lives, but when she is lured to a cemetery, she finds the monsters waiting for her - and their master has ordered her death.

They be crazier than we are.

The Laughing Corpse

Millionaire Harold Gaynor wants to hire Anita Blake to raise a 283 year old corpse. Of course this kind or animation would require a white goat - a human sacrifice. Anita doesn't do human sacrifice, but Harold does not want to take no for an answer.

If that wasn't bad enough Dominga Salvador wants Anita to partner with her in the zombie business, but it involves keeping the human soul trapped inside the dead body. Anita wants nothing to do with Dominga or her work, but when the voodoo queen sends something foul and rotting in her window, it is all Anita can do to survive.

You don't volunteer for slugfests with vampires. It shortens your life expectancy.

Circus of the Damned

A group of vampires are murdering humans. That's nothing unusual, but they are killing them with multiple bites and draining them of blood. They will rise as vampires, but they will rise as beasts - animalistic vampires that will slaughter everything in their path.

As if that wasn't enough trouble, a master vampire has come to town and wants to make Anita his human servant. New Master of the City, Jean-Claude, wants to mark Anita to keep her safe, but Anita would rather die than become a slave to any vampire. With two master vamps fighting for Anita's soul, an undead war has begun.

Vampires were always either trying to kill me, or own me. God, I hated being popular.

Do you enjoy the series?

The Lunatic Cafe

Members of the local werewolf pack have gone missing. Not only that, but other shapeshifter groups have lost members as well. They need Anita's help to find their family and friends. Anita must use her contacts with the police and the preternatural community to solve this one.

With all the missing shapeshifters and the different patterns, Anita realizes she may have more trouble than she thought tracking them all down. When the clues finally fall into place, it is too late. Anita and her friends are captured and Anita is locked in a cage with a brand new werewolf - on the night of the full moon.

I talk to myself everyone once in a while. Give myself very good advice. Sometimes I even take it.

Bloody Bones

Anita Blake has been called to Branson, Missouri to raise a family graveyard. There is a land dispute between two families and she must raise the corpses to find out who owns the land before a planned resort can be built. It all seems routine at first.

Then Anita is called to a murder in a nearby Missouri. Her zombie raising has been put on hold, because three teenage boys have been killed by preternatural means. Anita discovers that the land in question is being closely guarded for a reason. It had been holding a powerful creature at bay for centuries - and now that creature has been released and the slaughter has begun.

Never throw stones if you think they're going to come back and hit you.

The Killing Dance

Bounty hunter and assassin, Edward, calls Anita with bad news. He has been offered a contract on Anita's life. Someone wants her dead and no price is too high. While Edward stalls with his answer, local muscle has been hired to take care of the problem. With two attempts on her life, Anita goes into hiding and Edward comes in as backup.

Sabin, a master vampire and friend of Master of the City, Jean-Claude has come to ask Anita for her help. Years ago, his mate asked him to stop drinking human blood, and in doing so it has rotted his mind and his body. Anita agrees to help restore him, but when she is not fast enough, Jean-Claude and werewolf pack leader, Richard, are taken to serve as sacrifice for Sabin. Will Anita be able to save them before it is too late?

Vampires call me The Executioner. What I call them isn't repeatable.

Anita Fan Poll

Burnt Offerings

The vampire council has come to town to try Jean-Claude for what they believe to be crimes against them.

The council is to be greatly feared and when they take the leopard's hostage, Anita must face the council members to save them.

Captain Pete McKinnon has come to Anita Blake for help.

A supernatural firebug is burning buildings to the ground.

Then the attacks began happening to all vampires, including the Church of Eternal Life.

It is a recreation of The Burning, and Anita must stop it.

Everyone has his or her weaknesses. Some people smoke. I collect stuffed penguins.

Blue Moon

Richard, Ulfric of the werewolf pack, and Anita's ex, is out of town studying for his biology degree when he is arrested and accused of rape. Anita travels to Tennessee to hire a lawyer and get Richard freed.

Colin, Master of the City, does not take kindly to Anita Jean-Claude's human servant, entering his territory. Not only that but, Anita has trouble with the local police trying to run her out of town. And don't forget Franklin Niley, who uses more deadly means to try to scare Anita off - including a demon. With danger in all directions, how can Anita save Richard, his family, and her friends and make it back home safe to St. Louis?

Death, jewelry, or magic; it sounded like Valentine's Day.

Obsidian Butterfly

Edward has called in a favor and he really needs the help. Anita must travel to New Mexico and act as his backup. A terrible and powerful magic is being used to skin some humans alive and to slaughter others. Edward, with his Ted Forrester - bounty hunter alias, convinces the local police to call in Anita for her preternatural expertise.

Obsidian Butterfly, the local Master of the City, could be helpful in solving this mystery, but she offers more trouble as well. Nicky Boco, necromancer, and vagamour for the local werewolf pack knows what creature is murdering the residents, but he has his own secrets to protect. And treasure hunter, Riker, rears his head and causes some serious trouble for Edwards's new family - trouble that could be deadly.

Never trust people who smile constantly. They're either selling something or not very bright.

Who's your favorite male character in the Anita Blake series?

See results

Narcissus in Chains

Some of Anita's wereleopards friends are held hostage in a case of mistaken identity. When Anita goes to save them, she is injured. The claws from a wereleopard cut into her stomach, meaning on the next full moon she may become furry herself.

If that's not enough to worry about, a panwere named Chimera comes to take over the local lycanthrope groups. With all her friends in danger, and facing a life of the lunarly challenged, Anita has her hands full. With help from John-Claude, newcomer Micah, and hopefully Richard, Anita must face Chimera to save everyone from a fate worse than death.

When the monsters are involved, it's never just one dead body. One way or another the dead multiply.

Cerulean Sins

Belle Morte, the fountainhead of Jean-Claudes line, has sent one her minions, Musette, for a visit to St. Louis. Such a visit was planned for three months from now, but for Musette to show up early is a huge insult to Jean-Claude and his authority as Master of the City. Belle wants to put Jean-Claude in his place and demand Asher back to her side.

To make things worse, Leo Harlan shows up to hire Anita to raise an ancestor of his, but he just does not seem to be on the up and up. Anita is still trying to figure him out when she discovers she is being followed. With unwanted visiting vampires playing their deadly games, unknown bad guys staking her, and bodies on the ground from suspected shapeshifter kills, Anita is in neck deep and sinking fast.

One of the things that's kept me alive is shooting first and asking questions later.

Incubus Dreams

A vampire serial killer is murdering strippers. Anita is sure that none of Jean-Claude's vampires are involved, but with the unexplainable cases in her past and with her ties to the metaphysical community becoming stronger, her status with the local law enforcement is not as strong as it used to be. Her word is no longer enough.

Anita must solve the case with the help of her friends and contacts in the vampire and lycanthrope communities. With false clues and a master vampire pulling the strings, Anita needs all the help she can get - legal or otherwise.

The true way to a man’s heart is six inches of metal between his ribs.

Anita is asked to fill in for fellow animator Larry Kirkland on an animating job in Philadelphia. She needs to raise a federal witness for the FBI so that he can testify.

Anita travels to Philly with Micah at her side. On the trip, Anita learns more about Micah, including how he became a wereleopard.

But when Anita reaches the cemetery to raise the witness, something is wrong. Her necromancy has never reacted like this.

Afraid of what she will raise, but powerless to resist, Anita raises the zombie. What will she unleash?

The truth may not set you free, but used carefully, it can confuse the hell out of your enemies.

Danse Macabre

Jean-Claude, Master of the City, is throwing a party to welcome a vampire ballet company to town.

Among the guests are several visiting master vampires and the leaders of the various local lycanthrope groups.

During the ballet, a powerful force tries to take over the minds of all the guests.

The attack brings on a metaphysical visit from the Mother of all vampires and when Mommy Dearest shows up things go from bad to scary as hell.

When crime busting is easier than your personal life, something has gone seriously wrong.

The Harlequin

When Malcolm, the head of the Church of Eternal Life, asks Anita and Jean-Claude for help from a force he cannot name, she is surprised and confused. But she is even more confused when she finds a package with her name on it that contains a plain white mask.

Jean-Claude tells her to speak of them is death unless you first receive a mask. White is a warning that you are being watched - red or black could mean death. Receiving a white mask from the Harlequin should be good news, so why are members of their group suddenly dying. The Harlequin, police of the vampires, have come to town and no one is safe.

One thing I've learned about vampires - they keep pulling new rabbits out of their cloaks.

Blood Noir

Jason, a werewolf and friend to Anita, asks her to go home with him to see his dying father - a father that was abusive and cruel. Jason needs to say goodbye to his dad and try to forgive him for how he was treated growing up. How can Anita say no - even is it means she has to fly?

With an unforgiving father and a bad case of mistaken identity, Anita tries to be a good friend and support Jason anyway she can, but Marmee Noir, the mother of all vampires chooses that weekend to strike. She cuts Anita's ties to Jean-Claude and Richard and attacks her with a metaphysical power from a thousand miles away.

Once upon a time I’d only come to the Circus to kill vampires. Now I used the employee parking lot.

Skin Trade

When Anita receives a decapitated head in the mail, she must go to Las Vegas, Nevada to face a vampire serial killer. Vittorio (the master vampire serial killer that got away in Incubus Dreams) has sent this package to bait her, so she heads to Vegas to help out the local authorities and warn them on what they are about to face.

Before she arrives in Sin City, Anita discovers that the slaughter has already began. And, Vittorio has also set a personal trap for Anita for reasons she does not yet understand. Federal Marshals Edward, Olaf, and Bernardo have all been called in to assist on the case.

Anita also has trouble on the work front. Someone has been trashing Anita's reputation and the local authorities seem to have a problem trusting Anita. Living with a vampire might have something to do with it. Can Anita help with the case and regain the trust she once had?

The local weretiger clan makes an appearance as well and Queen Bibi challenges Anita. To make matters worse, Anita receives a surprise visit from the Mother of All Darkness. Mommy Noir finally reveals her plan for Anita and it is not good. It would mean the destruction of everything Anita holds dear.

I was caught between going yippy-skippy, I get to play with them both, and running like hell.

A prospective client, Tony Bennington, asks Anita to raise his recently deceased wife as a zombie.

He tells her he justs wants to talk to his wife one last time. Anita sympathizes with Tony. She understands pain and loss.

It seems like a routine animating job for Anita, but at the last minute, she realizes something is horribly wrong.

What Tony did not tell her about his wife will have grave consequences for both Tony and Anita.

Love sucks. Sometimes it feels good. Sometimes it’s just another way to bleed.

Anita Blake Series

By Laurell K. Hamilton

This series stars necromancer Anita Blake. When she's not raising the dead she helps the police on supernatural cases. Her love life is complicated- werewolf one day, vampire the next.

The triumvirate created between Jean-Claude, Anita Blake, and Richard Zeeman has made the St Louis vampires one of the most powerful vampire kisses in America. Jean-Claude is gaining power in himself and, in turn giving it to the vampires that are under his rule. This is similar to what Bella Morte did in Europe, during her reign of power.

Through her power and dealings, she almost took over has the ruling power of Europe, and there was those who are determined that Jean-Claude won't do the same in America. They think Jean-Claude's motives may be kinder, and his rulings gentler, but they still fear what he may do with the power he has gained.

Assassins are coming to St. Louis, and their target is Jean-Claude, and the entire vampire kiss is his command. Anita knows they're coming, but what can she do to protect Jean-Claude, and all those she loves and cares for?

Me, big tough vampire slayer, no throw up at sight of decapitated heads. Right.

Hit List

A serial killer is hunting the Pacific Northwest, murdering victims in a gruesome and spectacular way. The local police suspect "monsters" are involved, and have called in Anita Blake and Edward, US Marshals who really know their monsters, to catch the killer.
But some monsters are very real. The Harlequin have been the bogeymen of the vampire world for more than a thousand years; they are a secret so dark that even to speak their name can earn you a death sentence. Now they are here in America, hunting weretigers and human police.
The Harlequin serve the Mother of All Darkness, the first vampire. She was supposed to be dead, but only her body was destroyed. Now she needs a new one, and she's decided that Anita Blake's is the body she wants. Edward thinks the serial killings are a trap to lure Anita closer to the most dangerous vampire they've ever hunted. The vampires call Edward "Death," and Anita the "Executioner," but Mommy Darkest is coming to kill one and possess the other, and she doesn't care how many others have to die along the way. Source

One serial killer sends me a human head in a box, and I get all spooked. Go figure.

I look like a biker slut from hell meets soldier of fortune pinup.

I am a huge Anita Blake / Laurel K. Hamilton fan as well. Her first 5 Anita Blake books are my favorites. Then I have to admit that the middle ones - didn't have much in the way of plots - but I loved the character studies a lot. In her last book she seems to have returned to her earlier way of plotting. I'm so glad for that.

I discovered Anita while working at a book store and fell in love with the series. I turned many of my friends onto the series and consider many of the early books in the series to be favorites. But right around Harlequin I began to be frustrated with the series. The action, the magic, the intimate scenes were all still fantastic but what I was having a problem with was Anita herself. After countless near death escapes, and life changing events it felt like she was still dealing with the same emotional/personal issues that she had in book one. Her trust issues, stubborness and near superhuman ability to ignore anything that disturbed her too much. In a lot of ways it felt like the character hadn't changed and I right around Skin Trade was when I stopped reading. What do you think? Am I right or off the mark?

I've been meaning to read this series for a while now, the subject sounds like it's right down my alley (where vampires would hang out anyway haha). The mortal instruments is also a very good series that I would recommend checking out.

My fiance and I were at the comic book store and we found a couple of Anita Blake comics in the 25 cents bin. I was like "What's this??" and ended up looking them up online and found out that they were based on a book series. This intrigued me even further! I got the first book on Monday and read it all in one sitting. It's Wednesday right now and I'm already on the third book (one book a day!). I'm really enjoying the series thus far. :)

i have noticed that some people think that after the first few of these books, it is all about sex. it isnt, yes there is some scenes but most is about the next big and bad thing coming after them. i like the fact that anita has faults she makes mistakes but she always protects her people that she has taken in. if some one hurts them, they have met their end. simple as that. there are so many dynamic charaters and you can tell who they are by how Hamliton describes them, now that is a great auther. but i kind of want merry and anita to meet.

For the past four years I have probably read all of the Anita Blake books two or three times. I find these books to be extremely entertaining and Laurell K. Hamilton's way of describing her characters is very well done.
