Discover Anita Blake - Vampire Hunter

Updated on September 11, 2014

Who is Anita Blake?

Anita is a licensed vampire execution and a federal marshal. She has a badge, a gun (sometimes several), and she can take on centuries old vampires without blinking an eye.

Sound like an interesting woman? You bet! Anita is the main character in the Anita Blake series written by Laurell K Hamilton. This fast paced and charming story is something you don't want to miss.

If you have not yet discovered the Anita Blake series, be sure to read on to find out more about Anita and her cast of characters in this incredible set of novels.

Vampires, and Werewolves, and Magic, Oh My!

Vampires, shapeshifters, witches, zombies, and magic... Fantasies and myths, right? Not in the world of Anita Blake. Imagine modern day St. Lewis with a twist. An alternate reality that will bring you chills and thrills. The things that go bump in the night are real. Enter a world where vampires are citizens with legal rights. They own businesses, have families, and lead normal lives.

And don't forget the shapeshifters. Werewoves, weretigers and lions, wererats, and werebears. Lycanthropy is a disease and those who have it turn furry once a month. When? At the full moon, of course.

Learn about vampire politics and the inner workings of the lycanthrope community. Discover an alternate world filled with fantasy and possibilities. And meet characters that will capture your fascination and your heart.

Vampires call me The Executioner. What I call them isn't repeatable.

Why I Love Anita Blake

The Anita Blake storyline is a mix of mystery, fantasy, magic, horror and romance. The author Laurell K Hamilton has melded these genres together to create a fantastic and intriguing world. Follow Anita through 20 plus novels as she tries to take care of the monsters and her love life in her humorous and witty style. You will fall in love with this ongoing story.

I highly recommend that you check out this incredible author and her wonderful storyline. Laurell K Hamilton has done an outstanding job with this series of novels. Find a comfortable chair, a good lamp, and plan on spending the next few days falling head over heels for Anita Blake and her cast of characters.

I do suggest reading the novels in order, because the storyline flows closely from one book to the next.

You don't volunteer for slugfests with vampires. It shortens your life expectancy.

The Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Novels

I had originally published the content of this lens on another site and had already received some feedback. These are the comments I have received before the transfer.

Kris Vega says:

I think what I appreciate most about Anita is her tactical skill. Whatever power or trick she uses is backed up by her quick draw thinking. With a pistol ... she's pretty much a modern samurai. She started off as a shooter with a neat trick she could do at night, but evolved into a woman with many advantages. Yet she retains the knowledge that ... a bad guy with a gun can end it all. So she won't be sloppy (yet makes mistakes still).

LKH has done a great job in studying the psychology behind human survival instincts and it is evident in the way she sculpted Anita. She controls the dangerous instincts and uses the good ones whenever she is in a jam.

My second favorite "Anita" thing is that she's always getting some kind of new power :p I'm always guessing at what kind of power she will get next. Because when she does get one ... it usually means that some monster is gonna get the whammy real soon.

I just wish the "boss" villains got more page dedication. I really liked Chimera.

[align=center]New Orleans A place of Decadence, Desire and Death.

Five years ago Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and not only left the human population in shambles but the Vampires and the rest of the Supernatural world as well. Crevan, the Master Vampire of the City of New Orleans for the last twenty years was finally overthrown during the Chaos that ensued as the Hurricane ripped through the city. Crevan was corrupt and his power was challenged during the last two years of his reign. Course despite Crevan being overthrown there was no Vampire strong enough to completely take over the City, which left New Orleans in complete chaos.

Alair, a Master Vampire, and Ysabel Reinhart, his human servant, have spent the last ten years in Japan. Alair had been learning under the Master of a City in Japan when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and as he and Ysabel had been wanting for years now to come to the states, Alair was told by his Master to go to New Orleans upon learning of the Chaos consuming the city. Six months after Katrina, Alair and Ysabel entered New Orleans. Since arriving Alair has built his power base from literally the ground up. His rise to power has not been easy though. He had to fight to gain his position, which took a little over a year to do. Since gaining Master of the City status Alair has reorganized and rebuilt New Orleans not only for the Vampires but for the humans as well.

Alair has created businesses, very successful ones, that help keep his power base up and his social status in tack. Alair as also formed a triumvirate between him Ysabel and Dane the Ulfric of the Werewolf clan in New Orleans, as Werewolves are Alairâs animal to call. Dane and his clan are loyal to Alair now and help strengthen Alairâs power when called to do so.

Despite Alair being firmly in place he is not immune to other Vampires trying to attack and overthrow him. He has a weakness though tries hard to hide it. Heâs not a strict or cruel Vampire and often is seen as soft. Ysabel keeps Alair from becoming like many other Vampires, though he will and can at times let out his more feral side in order to keep his position.

The city is flourishing and more and more people are coming to the great place known as New Orleans. Some will be new allies others will be a great threat to the city and all who reside here.

Come to New Orleans and pick your poison Decadence, Desire or Death.

Too much sex and not enough story makes Anita Blake a very dull girl, IMHO. That being said, I'd still love to see some of the earlier works (Burnt Offerings and before) onscreen---my first pick to portray Anita would be the lovely Ms. Kelly Monaco, she of "Dancing With the Stars" and "General Hospital" fame!

I enjoy a good Gothic Romance. I've read some of Anita Blake's books but not all of them. I need to go back and pick up the rest of them.

      Great lens.

Nicely done! All the lenses I've made this week are about vampires so I can appreciate you admiration for Anita Blake. In the series I've been reading (Twilight & Breaking Dawn) the vampires are the good guys, so I imagine Anita's books are little different. 5*'s and a vote up on the Squids Choice Awards!
