Mrs. Jones, Principle

My understanding of this is that if you choose to use a title, you should leave off the Mr., Mrs., Dr., or so on. For example, if addressing the envelope to a dentist, you may use:
Dr. John Smith OR John Smith, D.D.S.
Dr. John Smith, D.D.S. is redundant and unnecessary.
To an attorney,
Mr. John Smith, Esquire - no.
John Smith, Esquire. or Mr. John Smith
That's my understanding, but of course, I may be wrong.
