My best guess ... probably not. Dictionaries were only invented in the late 1700s, before that people just spelt words any way they felt like. However now dictionaries have taken hold they make it very hard to start spelling a word differently.
What I think is going on is that English is splitting into two dialects: formal and informal. We will all still have to use the dictionary spelling for academic, legal and business use. But among friends, or in magazines and blogs I think we are increasingly free to use 'informal spellings'.
