Did others on HP have experience with Lulu.com or others that want you to upload your book?

Does anyone have experiences to share about Lulu.com? I have been trying to find an old fashioned publisher for a novella length (slightly over 30,000 words) which explains meanings of tarot cards in poetry and emotive prose. It says its free, but when I last sent out manuscripts many publishers expected me to lay out several thousand dollars and do all the marketing stuff myself. Please share if you know of Lulu or others. I would like to make at least some money. Thanks so much. Jean Bakula

My experience so far, Jean, is that you may be lucky in finding a publisher who will take your work and publish it. However there are those out there who will charge lots to get your book designed, laid out, printed and maybe put it on a website for selling.
Have you tried the normal route of sending your manuscript to various established publishers in the hope they will publish it for you? You can get a list by keying in publishers and follow through on hte list.
Your other alternative is to find someone who will edit your manuscript and give your feedback about how it looks, reads, etc. Then transfer it into an e-format book for Kindle for example and load it onto Kindle Direct Publishing for selling on Amazon.com.
To market your book yourself then, hold a launch party where you invite family and friends (many) to talk about your Ebook, which they can download onto their PCs, iphones, ipads, androids. Some take Kindle, some do not, but if they know about how their phones work, they will know all that.
You may want to transfer your manuscript into ePub also - another format for downloading. The formats for books and downloading are usually called ePub and Mobi(Kindle).
Then it's just a question of going out to libraries or reading groups and telling them all about your writing and trying to convince them to dowload your eBook onto their phones and ipads and PCs.
But I would stay away from the so called publishers who want large sums to do what you can do as an eBook.
    Good luck, anyway.

My writing group published 3 small books using Lulu.com.
We did all the editing, layout, etc ourselves. The books printed up nicely. We only ordered 100, and then got more as we needed them.
The only problem is the page indexing did not work with one of the books because our editing people forgot that the page size was smaller in the lulu.com book than in the word program pages.

Some of My books are on Lulu.com.  It is very easy to use, it is free as it is a Print-on-demand publisher so you are free to order as many or as few books for your own inventory or just let them be sold direct to the customer and you receive royalty checks periodicly as they are sold.  It is up to you to advertise to your friends, fans, family to let them know they are available.  They also offer promotion options for a price.  They charge you wholesale price and the more you order at a time, the better the price.

They also offer free shipping periodicly and that is when I order mine!
