Couple of really great ones I've read recently are:
The Given Day by Dennis LeHayne
The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson
The first is fiction and absolutely action packed. As soon as I closed it, I wanted to start it over. There is some profanity, but not an offensive amount for the average reader. The story is awesome. It's by the man who wrote Shutter Island.
The other is a nonfiction account of the design and implementation of the Chicago World's Fair in 1893. It's also an account of the actions of Herman Webster Mudgett, one of the first serial killers in America.
