Is about a mid-life crisis, that we all all go through. Where do we go, what would happen if I die right now, are we real role models?... and such... This song was inspired by an incident at a Party: Paul was married to Betty Harper back then, and at the Party, French composer and conductor Pierre Boulez, who was attending the same party, mistakenly referred to Paul as "Al" and to Peggy as "Betty", inspiring Simon to write a song. The song features this catchy bass run performed by Bakithi Kumalo (who's birthday was on the day of recording...so you can feel his vibes)

Can't argue with what's been said....but wanted to tell you that the original video is BOMB! Chevy Chase and Paul Simon. Ya gotta see it!

I looked it up on this website http://www.lyricinterpretations.com/Pau … Call-Me-Al I gather that it is about a guy going through some sort of midlife crisis and turns to alcohol and his whole life changes. I thought this was an interesting interpretation. I love that song and I found this cool website! Thanks for asking smile

That lyric interpretations site is great!  Just have to correct one of the comments - Paul Simon was never married to a Betty Harper!  I think this is one of his greatest songs.  And part of what I love about his songs are the lyrics are so captivating, but also lend themselves to so many interpretations...
