Lot's Wife. Why a Pillar of Salt?

In the biblical story where God destroys Sodom and Gomorra. Where he tells lot to leave the city and not to look back or he will be turned into a pillar of salt. I am beginning to see that this was not God be vengeful on Lot‘s wife when she looked back. . I know now it has some symbolic meaning about mourning for what can‘t be anymore. But why a pillar of salt? Salt in those days was valuable and used for currency. Maybe there is a theologies out there who can answer this one for me.
