What was your favourite book as a child?
Mine was the Chronicles of Narnia, and they remain a firm favourite. I remember receiving them in a boxed set, as a very special present at Christmas when I was seven. Lots and lots of books are my favourites though, and they all still have special places on my bookcase - I could stand to let toys go, really, but never my books.
My favourite book as a child was Alice in Wonderland. I always thought I could shrink like Alice and meet the animals, but it never happened.
Not read that one must take a look for the grandchildren
Thanks.
I was going to say Charlotte's Web which really is close to being my favorite as a child I felt so bad Charloette at the end when she died it was sad. But I have to side a little with Gloshei I loved Alice In Wonderland as well as the Wizard Of Oz but I think I really liked Alice In Wonderland much better. It was so neat how the author made such an interesting world with talking rabbits, the Queen, and The Mad Hatter. Always loving to write myself I tried to write a story that was close to Alice In Wonderland but of course it was nowhere near the amazing tale. I even bought the new Alice In Wonderland movie that came out last year or the year before can't remember now lol. Great question Lady Wordsmith.
My favourite “book” when I was a child was a series of little books , collectively called ‘The Dumpy Library’ a set which came in a little wooden book case with gold leaf words on the plinth. They were a series published in Bombay… What a surprise, another part of my Anglo India heritage. This little library stands on a Rajasthani chest of drawers in my bedroom, quite close to where Pooh, the Teddy Bear featured in my profile, and some hubs, is sitting, in case he gets bored and needs a bit of light reading to pass the day.
The titles include:
‘A Tale of Ginger the Cat’,
‘A Tale of Mrs Goose’ (who happened to be a mongoose),
‘Dopey the Donkey’,
‘Monty the Monkey’,
‘Pokes the Porcupine’,
‘Pongo the Potamus’,
‘Snuffles and the Fairies’,
Then I moved on to ‘When We Were Very Young’, ‘Now We Are Six’, Winnie the Pooh’ and ‘The House at Pooh Corner’, all my A. A. Milne. I still have every copy of the above collections
I really enjoyed the Hardy Boys series especially whenever I could my little paws on the original versions.
As far as single books are concerned, there is one that sticks out that I haven't seen in a long time: I think the title was "Fighter" but I'm not that sure. It concerned a kid who, because he always had to deal with a bully abusing him, decides to take lessons on how to defend himself. He also has a buddy who always tries to be there for him.
My favorite book was 'The Secret Garden' by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I loved the idea of a place that nobody else goes, tha has a little mystery about it. I also loved Enid Blyton's Faraway Tree stories. Guess I've always liked the idea of escaping into another world
My favourites were the 'Jennings & Darbyshire' series, about two young public school boys. I did not attend public school so some of their escapades were quite different to my own. In a similar veign there was also the 'Billy Bunter' series.
Best Wishes.
I liked The Dog and Cat. It is an Armenian fairy tale by Tumanyan. Brave Coward was also very funny (Qaj Nazar).
In my childhood my father bought me several books, but the the book I preferred most was "Panchatantra-written by Vishnu Sharma".The Panchatantra is an inter-woven series of colourful fables, many of which involve animals. I dreamed of attaining so much knowledge and becoming like the princes sketched in the story.
My favorite book was about Helen Keller. I was intrigued by what it would have been like to live in her world of darkness. As I got a little older, my favorites were The Diary of Anne Frank and stories of mysteries.
The Secret Garden by Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett. I loved that book. My Aunt gave it too me when I was 8. I loved that book and still have the same book and have given it to my daughter to read.
The Grapes of Wrath. Yeah, I know. It was a depressing childhood. ;o)
