What are your top ten works of literature that you would bring with you to a deserted island?
Or if you are going to be stuck on an island for the rest of your life, what are the top 10 works of literature that you would bring with you?
Since I own both the complete works of William Shakespeare in one (very large) volume, I get to count that as one, right? Also, I have the complete Sherlock Holmes canon in a two-volume set, so that's two more. That requires me to choose my other seven favorite reads--which would mean looking through my vast personal library and dithering over "this one?" or "that one?" for possibly hours. Let me just say that, were I never to be near a library again for the rest of my life (and at my age, I'm in late innings), I would be prepared. I can't go to sleep at night without reading. Thank goodness this is a hypothetical question!
Being on a deserted island with ten works of literature sounds slightly dreamy, actually, as long as I knew that it would come to an end. Here's my list:
1. The Bible
2. Shakespeare
3. The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky
4. Persuasion by Jane Austen
5. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
6. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
7. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
8. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
9. The Short Stories of Flannery O'Connor
10. Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Bible
Do I have to stop at ten?
Ooh, great question. I'd take the following for sure:
1. Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut
2. Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
3. The Complete Edgar Allan Poe
4. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare
5. The Ultimate Voltaire
6. The Razor's Edge by W. Somerset Maugham
7. The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley
8. A Boy and His Dog by Harlan Ellison
9. Thomas the Rhymer by Ellen Kushner
10. Submissive by Anya Howard (that's my pen name, but hey if I'm on a desert island, who is going to care if I read one of my own?)
the biggest, thickest books I could find so i have a large supply of kindling and a weapon in case of animal attack.
Of Human Bondage by W Somerset Maugham
Man's Search for Meaning, Viktor Frankl
Madame Bovary Gustave Flaubert
Don Quixote, Cervantes
An American Tragedy, Theodore Dreiser
Dombey and Son, Charles Dickens
Sons and Lovers, DH Lawrence
Song of Myself, Walt Whitman
Women Who Run with the Wolves, CP Estes
Maturity, Osho.
