Have you ever read a book that wounded your soul or disturbed you deeply?

I have recently read a book that was so disturbing, that I felt like I have wounded soul in some way. I will not mention the title of the book because I do not want to tempt other people into reading it; however, the book is readily available and written by a famous author. So, I guess I am asking can a piece of literature cause harm and how so (either on a micro or macro scale)?

I did read a book that sickened me and left me feeling horrible.  It wasn't literature. For some reason (many years ago) I picked up a true crime book about a woman that was kidnapped and kept as a sexual slave for 7 years. She was horribly abused and tortured.

That is one book I am very sorry I read.  Did I have the good sense to put it down once I realized how upsetting it was? - no.  Like an idiot I kept reading, wish I hadn't. One good this is that I have never read true crime stories since.

I did the same thing and kept on reading. I like the author and kept hoping that he would reedem himself but it never happened. In closing, I thank you for your story.

Here's a question - my answer above answered the posed question.  Why the down vote?  Anybody?

Duffsmom, I would not worry about it, you gave a great answer; however, it would be interesting to find out that person's reasoning on his/her answer.

Yes I read a Hindi Novel Divya by Yashpal. It enforced me to think and analyze women condition in ancient India. How a princess become the beggar of road and how society criticizes her mistake that she has not committed. Heart touching novel

The book you mention seems like it "touched" you in a good way (even though it was sad or tragic. The novel I am talking about, has no redeeming value at all. In conclusion, thank you for answering my question.

Yes, a piece of literature can definitely wound the reader. We all are human and those who have it in them to feel for others are sure to be touched by any thing that is disturbing. As far as I am concerned, if a book is based on a fact and something that had or still occurring in the society, we should read it even if it hurts us. Some one has suffered that and we should atleast bring ourselves to read it.

Yes. It was a horrifying book that I never wish to read again.
