How do you build up your vocabulary so that you can dramatically improve your communication skills?
There are may word tools such as a thesaurus, but the most solid way is to read higher vocabulary material. If you understand every word on the page without looking one up- consider the material below your reading challenge level.
Thank you very much for the excellent advice.
I have found that reading is the best way for me to increase my vocabulary. When I was younger, every time I came across a word I did not know the meaning of, I looked it up. Nothing is more embarrassing them misusing a word and have someone look at you like you are daft.
I read a lot and since I read so many different types of things, my vocabulary builds. I do look up a word if I do not know it but I do not find many words that I do not know anymore. My 15 year old daughter has an awesome vocabulary and is always trying to catch me on a word but she hasn't yet.
I wrote a hub about how to expand your vocabulary. The thrust of it is: read challenging texts; note recurring words that you're not familiar with; keep a dictionary and thesaurus nearby for reference.
I only improve my vocabulary for tests like the GRE. Communication is best left simple, not confusing to those around you.
