Well, it's my personal opinion that the best way to publish a book is the traditional way (agents, publishers, editors, etc.) But I'm very biased in that regard. So the best way to gauge which is right for you is to think of it like this:
Self publishing is easy to get into, but difficult to be a success. Libraries and bookstores will NOT carry a self published book and the advertising and editing side of things will be 100% dependent on you. You retain more rights and make more money off of each book sold, but selling copies will be maddeningly difficult.
Traditional publishing is very hard to get into, but has a higher chance of success. Libraries and bookstores WILL carry your book and both the publisher and your agent will be working with you to make the book a success. You will make less money off of each book sold, but selling copies will be easier because it will have a higher level of exposure. Plus, with the traditional route, you also have a higher chance of winning literary awards and making movie/tv deals.
So that's it. Do you want to do more work getting into the industry or more work marketing your book?
