   Apart from Microsoft Word, name another similar doc. writer that is suitable for writing ebooks
   
   I have tried Open Office, but have noticed that you can only write and save in pdf. This is not a problem, but when you download to kindle it doesn't save the page breaks and bunches it all together. Is there another free one like Open Office that works perfectly?

   Microsoft Works.  I use this software for everything I do, and have for years.  It's very flexible and user friendly.  Give it a try!

   A large number of alternative word processors can be found through a search on the Web.  They were a product from a previous time when WP and Word were the mainstream but not what writers wanted.  They've come a long way but remain business focussed.  There are even a few free ones out there that are quite good.  I remember using one created by a software developer in the UK who really wanted to become a fiction writer and his creation was born from that.
   
   For the most part these programs differ from Word in available formats.  Other than specific screen writing software I continue to use Word, because I'm an IT professional with the skills to easily work with what I have.  For screen writing, the compliment of integrated software from Write Brothers and such just can't be beat.  Having functions like breakdown pages generate automatically is something I can't do without.

   Try Sigil. You can download it for free and I think you'll find the Help file is useful. It's been a while since I used it but I recall it would allow you to create kindle files as well as epub and others.

   You might want to get a newer version of Open Office. The last time I used it, there were multiple different formats it could save, including .doc. I always used that feature because I knew, eventually, I would get MS word back and I wanted the files to be compatible.
