All words - languages - carry weight, meaning and what might be called ingredient X, which is cultural baggage. It's this cultural baggage which determines whether or not a word is acceptable to the average ear!! It's a complex business because when you think about it what are words? They're only sounds expressed in different ways. Yet their potency is unmatched. Say one word out of place and you could start a war! Say a word or two in the right place and you could be in love!
There's also a grey area where mild swear words are acceptable...in the UK we have words such as blooming, blinking.....and others!
Another important thing to remember is the environment in which words are used.
For example, the use of the f word is usually unacceptable say at the average dinner table or in a classroom and most places you go! Yet go see a Hollywood movie with big stars (who are role models for millions of kids!) in it and depending on the rating you'll hear the same word repeatedly. It almost becomes cool to see a celebrity using a taboo word!
You've posed a good question - you need a hub I think, a blooming long hub at that!
