What are some ways you would promote your self-published book?

I recently completed my first novel and went ahead and self-published through createspace. Now, how do I get the word out there? Is it even possible to do so? Would I have been better off trying to get the book traditionally published? What are some ways you would promote your self-published book?

Personally, I always recommend attempting traditional publishing before self publishing. But, as you've already self published, you can start advertising in much the same way you advertise your hubs. It's about networking, building followers, and back linking as much as possible. Create a presence for yourself as an author. Make a facebook page, a twitter page, and maybe even a blog. Make places where readers can find you and share you with other people. Facebook even offers an ad program where you can pay a little to have your book advertised on the right hand side of the page for people with similar interests. All of this won't result in instant returns, but if you start building a strong foundation now; it will set you up for success in the future.

That's a great question, as was said below you have to promote it in much the same way you would with any other piece of writing, get it out there. Talk to people, I mean once the book is finished the hard work really begins. I have some hubs on marketing I am also doing one one key words etc... What I like is, I just googled your name and the product, and it came up, which is a first good step. Some people fail to do, even this. Even if you publish through a traditional publishing house you are still responsible for the marketing of your book. My policy is give away freely. I believe that if we give away snippets of our work, we show people our talent. Some may disagree with me, but I am posting an entire book up free of charge for that reason. Do check my hub on self publishing, and marketing.

Congratulations on publishing your book! It takes a lot of work to get to that point, and now you have another hard job to tackle!

Do you have it formatted and available for distribution through Amazon? If so, they have some good information on the site and will do a bit of promoting for you.

For both bound and electronic versions, I'd probably be promoting reviews in several ways: through blogging, sending it to people who can review it to a large following (like the appropriate department of the New York Times, for instance.) I'd also look for forums where interested people are likely to be. For example, if Godbolt is about God in some way, there may be websites that offer message boards where users talk about their views or discuss the Bible, and if the site permits people to post links, then by becoming an active member of that forum, I may have opportunities to introduce the book.

If you have bound versions, you can also approach local, brick-and-mortar bookstores and see if they'll carry it.

efiction magazine offers free ads for indie authors. Otherwise, just get the word out. facebook. Twitter. Digg. Find friends and peers to review the book on amazon, do giveaways, contests, etc.

There is a website, can't recall the name at the moment, starting in August where you can sell your product. I will forward you the email when I get a chance. Also, there are small radio shows you can go on to promote your book.
