Truth is always stranger than fiction, but fiction always has at least a thread of truth.


Why do authors include the disclaimer that any likeness to any person living or dead is purely coincidental? If an author uses people from their past, and they are not harming them, or being defamatory, (especially if deceased), would it be a legal requirement to use the disclaimer anyway?
