Do you have a favorite novel you have read that you like more than others?

What is the name of the novel and who is the author?  Describe why you like the novel and would you recommend it to others for reading?

The novel I re-read are often the novels from my childhood.  I still enjoy reading The Secret Garden by Burnett and White Fang/Jack London.   I loved both of those books as a young girl but for very different reasons.

Mary in the Secret Garden was a disagreeable, not-pretty girl who no one really liked.   She loses her family, her country of birth and has to relearn the world.  As a kid, I loved the idea that even though seemed ugly inside/outside could become beautiful by just being happier.

White Fang...I read the first time when I was ten and a dozen time since.   The book is about love, independence, connection...and the love of the great outdoors.

Do we ever outgrow our favorite childhood books?

Excellent novels.  I read these two as a child also, and both are on my bookshelf today.  No, I don't think we ever outgrow our childhood favorites.

One of my favorite books to read and reread is a teen novel called Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey.  This novel is funny and fun with no hidden agenda. I just really enjoy it and because it is a teen novel, it is not full of gratuitous sex scenes.

The Sequel, Jessica Rules the Dark Side is also fun, but the first is my favorite.

Interesting.  I have never heard of this book, but I'm glad you mentioned it here.  I like teen/young adult literature and I will have to look into reading this book.  Thank you!

I've loved J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings since about the sixth grade when I  first read them. On top of just being awesome for a million different reasons, there's a lot of sentimental attachment I have to the story and the physical books I have that no other novel has.

I think everyone knows the basic premise because of the movies so I won't go into that here (even though, of course, the movies are nothing like the novels). I wouldn't recommend it to just anyone because everyone I've recommend them to except for just one person has actually read them and enjoyed them. I'd recommend them to patient readers who are good at keeping up with very detailed stories. Especially if they love fantasy since Tolkien is a biggie in that arena.

I like your choice, Lisa.  I have read the Tolkien trilogy and I loved it and I agree the books are better than the  movie.  I have also read The Hobbit.  This is an excellent choice!

The Catcher in the Rye I would say. Never again the desire and will for self liberation was heard as loud as this. A classic, humane and full of spirit, tough and gentle, this book I will always love.

Good choice!  Believe it or not, I have never read this book.  I just tried to download it on my Kindle, but couldn't find it.  All I could find were reading guides for the book, which I don't want.  I will actually have to read the real book!  LOL

I really liked Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest." I would recommend it to others because the characters come to life; and, the reader experiences not only, disgust, sadness, and shock over how the patients were treated by the staff; but also joy, laughter, and warmth over things they did or shared with each other to escape from the negative world they lived in ... if only for a short time. This book is a good example of how bullying effects its victims; and, it teaches us to become more aware of how we treat others and the importance of stepping in and standing up against bullying.

Excellent choice of a novel. also.  I have read this and viewed the movie.  I agree with your comments about bullying.  And, this illustrates how we mistreat those with mental disabilities and breakdowns.  Shameful!  Thank you for your recommendation

One of my favorites is The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. It's a heartwarming story about following your dreams. It is well written and inspirational without being preachy.

Yes I do. The name of the novel is "The Science of Getting Rich" and the author is Wallace .D. Wattles.
It's a novel that changed my entire life and brought me so many oppurtunities and good things in life. Yes I would recommend it to others because it is the book that will change everyone's lives.
