There wasn't one actual poem but a book with a .series of poems by James R Walker Sr. titled Speak Nature which my Mom gave me while I was grammar school.  I fell in love with poetry after reading this anthology.  It's an old book published in 1965.  I still have it smile

For me , it was a poem called "The wreck of the Hesperus" a poem of a ship wreck where the captain tied his daughter to the main mast of the ship to protect her from being thrown overboard ! ..Hawthorn ?

I love that poem and it is by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow who also happens to be a favorite of mine.

Thankyou all for answering smile  I asked  because when I read 'Strange Meeting' by Wilfred Owen  at school I  thought it was awe-inspiring. For me that was the point at which  I realised the huge  power of writing and what it could convey.

No, for me it was a book that belonged to my father. I discovered it after he died. I must have been 9.  The Complete Works of Robert Service. I read through it, discovering poetry and it stayed with me. I wanted to be able to do that with words and started trying my hand at poetry very young.
