This is only going to be half an answer to your question because I don't want to denigrate an author whose writing I've enjoyed for a long time. Therefore, I won't give the author's name or what the series is about.
What I want to describe is what made me angry when I bought this author's most recent book and finished reading it. It ended with a cliffhanger, designed to get the reader to buy and read the next in the series to discover what happened. I felt like this was a cheap trick, and it will have the opposite effect on me. I WON'T buy or read the next one. I'll just imagine my own ending!
A hardcover novel isn't cheap these days--especially one by an established author with a big following. There was nothing in the blurb to indicate this novel would end in such a way that the words "to be continued" would be in order.
I've seen reviews of this book (very good), and the author continues to win award after award, so I may be the only reader who felt cheated.
