   Do you write here on HubPages and perhaps elsewhere for love, or money?
   
   I read the latest HubPages newsletter and noticed the last part about doing keyword research. It said something along the lines of: "If you know you have been bested, then it's back to the drawing board". In other words, don't bother. What sort of attitude is that? I write whatever I want to write about and I don't really care if someone else has "gotten there first". I couldn't really bring myself to write about something that I have no interest in, just doing it for the money. Money earned from HP is really just a bonus, I've come to realise.

   I write on Hub Pages both for love and for money. Writing is what I love, it is my passion. If I can actually make some money doing what I love and am passionate about why not? I mainly write for Hub Pages but also written some things for Wizzley and Wikinut. I write what I am interested about and what I want to share with others. I will never write a hub about something that I have no interest in even if it can bring in more money my way. And just because someone already wrote about a certain time that I wanted to write about I will still go ahead and write about it.

   To each their own. I personally love to write, but I also make a living at it. That means sometimes I write things for my clients that aren't always the most engaging things to write, but they pay the bills.  I ghost write a lot of material, some of it is extremely engaging and interesting, others not so much .  The important thing is I get to use a natural skill and talent both as a hobby and in my career and I think that is the best of both worlds. 
   
   In my mind, keyword research is necessary, not to tell you "what to write" per se, but to help you determine what people would be searching for to find what you've written.

   If someone has "gotten there first" then that means the topic is something people are interested in. I agree with you; I'll write about something I'm interested in no matter if there are plenty of articles out there already on the same subject. Plus if I have been bested by another author, or even if I have written a great article myself, then I'll write a similar one with some different content and upload to Squidoo.

   I am here at Hubpages because I love to write and really enjoy having a place to post my work. I do not know and don't really care about keywords, or SEO. I just love to write and enjoy interacting with others, commenting on their hubs, answering questions etc.

   It doesn't mean "don't bother", it means start over. Begin again. Fresh beginnings. You are thinking very negatively over that statement. It doesn't matter about money, it's not about beating other writers, writing is about enjoying what you write. I could never write for a living because I have to be interested, show passion and understanding with what I write. The addition of money has always been a bonus, but now after two years it pays a bill or two. Hubpages has since then become a welcome hobby.

   Your question is love or money? My question is "Why not both?"
   
   I can understand HubPages's concern for revenues. They are running a business, not a hobby. As for many of us, we are not professional writers and are writing primarily as a hobby. Thus, your remark that "money earned from HP is really just a bonus". I share your sentiment because I write because I love to write. I have done some keyword research before, but on looking at the topic, it's not where my expertise lies. As I progress, maybe one day, I would be better equipped to write on high-paying keywords. Let's be honest. If I can make US$1.00 per hub per month, why make US$0.05, right?
