After my cataract surgery, my distance vision improved to the point I did not need glasses. I did use over-the-counter reading glasses for a few weeks. If I had good vision to begin with and started to need reading glasses, I would check with my ophthalmologist. Your overall vision may really need assistance that you have not realized. If he detects a problem only with your ability to read, he can write a prescription for that or if you ask, he might tell you what strength of over-the-counter glasses would work, while reminding you to get a checkup each year. I knew I had cataracts but after being told, did not notice any change in my vision for about a year. The first to go was the up close or reading vision.
