Should I make my Hubpage as my personal writing blog and promote it?

I have started writing recently and set up a career progress plan as freelancer writer. I am a newbie and all the site thing or technical techniques are alien to me. I set up a writing blog as recommended by experience writers however I do not know how to use HTML and my blogger looks amateur and I feel ashamed linking to my blog. Readers and potential clients would leave immediately after seeing that dull design. :( I consider making my Hubpages as my personal writing blog to promote my writing and building reputation as a writer. Have anyone has experienced doing this before?

Thanks for your comment. I agree that blog is more flexible because I can post anything without being spam. But if I want to build quality for my blog, all of posts should be thoroughly checked as same as posts I put into Hubs though :( Right?

Thank you. Where do you build portfolio? One friend suggested me use Contently.com. I also intent to use Hub to build reputation first. I signed up for oDesk but I haven't had anything great to show potential clients. I only had few Hub posts.

I agree that in long run Hubs is not enough. I plan to create one specific theme blog. I think it's very hard. :p I love to write various topics. Without one particular theme, do you think it still attracts readers and clients?
