   Who is your favorite author?
   
   Do you have a favorite author? Who is he or she and what is it about them that makes them your favorite author? Is it the way they write or their sense of humor, or is it what they stand for...or something else?

   John Steinbeck. Although we differ politically, he was my favorite.

   John Steinbeck. I love his stories, characters, and the eras and settings to his stories.

   For past writers I'd say Charles Dickens. Christmas would not be Christmas without some version of A Christmas Carol. Also there's A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, Hard Times, and the list goes on.
   
   For present writers I like Terry Pratchett. There's Soul Music, The Truth, Making Money, and the list goes on.
   
   Both authors have a lot of heart and have a lot to say about the times they lived in and, in the case of Pratchett, the times he's still living in.

   I would have to put J. K. Rowling at the top of my list. I like different authors for different reasons, but the skill I tend to admire most is the one that keeps a reader glued to a page. For example, a lot of people take issue with Dan Brown for fudging facts and falling back on overused plot devices, yet the guy is a wiz when it comes to keeping the reader engaged (more so with his earlier books). It's that skill that I admire most because it's the only skill required for financial success in writing. I think every author wants to be regarded as a literary powerhouse, but it is too easy to strive for deep, thoughtful narrative and fall short. We would all be better off, as writers, accepting what we can do, and what we want to do, rather than what we think we should be doing.
