Why is the expression, "BS" considered to be acceptable English usage?

Everyone knows what it means. And no, we're not talking about a Bachelor of Science degree. And while we're on the subject, how did "fubar" manage to fly under the radar of our Language Police? Does creating an acronym somehow sanitize a crude expression? Enquiring minds want to know. And that's no bull.
