In your lifetime you might well have half-a-dozen careers.  My advice?   Take up something you like doing - or think you will.  Stay with it for five years.  Then switch to another career, and stay for five. Do this two or three times.   That will provide you with much wider ranging experience and skills for your later working life.   And remember: there are exactly the same amount of years between forty and sixty as there are between twenty and forty, so you don't have to have 'made it' by forty. Okay?

Chances are you'll find your 'calling' or 'mission' in life sometime or other.  When you do, you'll know it.  It might not be a 'career' at all.  But it will keep you more contented than any amount of 'ladder climbing.'

For me it must be a career I can embrace, love and indeed provide an equilibrium between demand and personal choice of when I am on the clock. If you indeed love what you do, you will not watch time pass-you-by and you will enjoy going to this place.
I am lucky I have indeed found this as a tenured Senior Professor and Psychologist. My days are filled with intrigue, critical thinking and a wee bit of instruction to college students in the areas of psychology and technology. My summers are for the most part uneventful and full of intrigue...
