As far as I'm aware 'attentat' means assassination as opposed to murder (more sinister). I came across it a long time ago in Austrian and German newspapers when I was in Vienna in the late 60's. It might even be French, for all I know. It could well have been 'borrowed' by the Austrians (as they've borrowed many other French as well as Italian words).
