If Hubbers are no longer rating Hubs, who is rating them, and what criteria is being used?

Interesting, that's what happened to Squidoo a few weeks before it closed down.
All our points were taken away, everyone was annoyed, no one guessed what was going to happen, but it did, hope the same doesn't happen here.

I don't know WillStarr, but my guess would be how many "hits" your hub gets and how many readers click on the stupid ads that show up.
But then you could write a hub on the proper way to open up a tin can and it would be great reading.  That is the only rating I give a damn about.  I could care less about SEO and word count and all the other crap we are supposed to follow.  I guess that is why I don't write hubs anymore.

I am no expert, but from my understanding for the featuring process hubs go through Amazon Turk as well as the Hub Hopper. I am not sure how that affects a hub score. At Amazon Mechanical Turk readers are paid to rate them. However they must go through a qualifying testing process and maintain a set rating standard. Those standards are determined by HubPages.

    For the criteria you can check out these links;

    Informational Hubs
    http://hubpages.com/help/hub_hop_table#informational

    Creative Hubs

At the FAQ in the Table of Contents is 'The Quality Assessment Process', which has 20 item descriptors.

Hi Tim, but how does the Hub Hopper work now that you can't vote or can you?  Being that the vote up/down and other votes are not longer available, how does the Hub Hopper work now?  Just curious.

Faith Reaper Look at the top center left of your Account Page for access. When there a rating box is at the left. The 1st is a box to check if creative/humor. Next, 3 categories with slide bars for rating 1 - 10. The ratings are explained.

The Hub Hopper is still working - not sure why the link to it is not readily available for everyone. HP is always tinkering with the website to maximize 'real estate'. Who knows where it is now or why they moved it.

Well, I don't understand how the Hub Hopper is even relevant now due to the vote up/down and other votes are taken away, unless they have revised it to allow hubbers to vote accordingly?  Just curious.  Guess, I need to go Hub Hopping ...

Hubbers are still rating hubs. Will, the measure is we show up in mass to read your stories. All the statistics are for the computer programmers not the readers. Some people have to crunch numbers some savor a well written sentence.

Good question, Will, and one I would like to know the answer to. My guess is that more and more responsibility and authority is being handed over to Robin and her group of editors - and what their criteria is, is a mystery.  HP does not listen to Hubber concerns, ideas or suggestions, so it stands to reason that they don't need our ratings on Hubs either.

Hi Phyllis, I read somewhere a long time ago that it is "bots" that crawl the site at night and do all the updating as to each hubs score ...hopefully, that has changed, but HP does not have enough real people to read all hubs and truly decide ...

Excellent question, Will. Can't wait to see what HP's answer is.

On another note, with so many hubs being un-featured for lack of engagement, how does taking away our voting rights (thumbs up, awesome, interesting, etc.) affect engagement? Negatively, I would say. I notice some people chose to vote but not leave comments. So, what's up?

    1. Faith Reaper profile image84
Faith Reaperposted 8 years agoin reply to this

A long while ago, it was indicated that "bots" did the numbers and that is so disenchanting to know that a real person may not even read one's hub...not sure if that is the case, but it was stated that bots run at night to update hub scores, etc.?

I wish I knew.  There may be a statement about this somewhere, but they have not been transparent in putting out that information at the present time (8-28-15).

Every Hub is rated by an automated system. It's supplemented by ratings from trusted people on Mechanical Turk that are scored against an internal panel of raters that do sample ratings daily.

Cool. That tells me that the art of writing is still a mystery and HP is just doing the best they can.

Isn't it nice to be judged by a computer?

    3. WillStarr profile image81
WillStarrposted 8 years agoin reply to this

If a computer is such a good judge of Hub quality, why not just have the computer write them?

My guess is the computer rates Hubs according to how well a writer complies with HubPages recommendations, and not on content at all.

Exactly, Will, I have been under the impression that "bots" make the decisions as there is certainly not enough staff (real people) to read all of the thousands of hubs ...

rating hubs?  I've been here awhile.  I don't know what that means.  How  do you rate a hub?  You mean the buttons that said "funny" or whatever on the bottom?  I never put much stock in those, and I don't think I've ever rated a hub - just "liked" it on FB or tweeted about it.  I don't think I noticed any of my ratings. Hmmm...  Ditzes like me are saved from a lot of worry smile

The editors, the powers to be on this site. The ones who made half of my hubs un-featured a year later. The ones that send them back telling you there are broken links, too many ads, etc. etc. etc. If I had to guess I would say those who oversee this site. I would rather have my fellow writers rate my hubs than those who have no face or name.
