Why do some people's profile refer to themselves in third person on networking sites like Hub Pages?

It boggles my mind to read a writer's profile in hp & it's written in the third person. Does the author think that gives him/her some sort of credibility beyond writing in the first person? Does the author think he/she is making the description sound objective when we all know it is totally subjective, there is no third person writing it? Is their goal to sound more assuring reading about the person from someone else's(?) perspective? Although it sounds as someone else is also certifying him/her it is a total ruse, isn't it? Psychologists say it's done for an easier time dealing with stress.

    Given the meaning of pretentious,

attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc. than is actually possessed

you'd think someone who does it would comment to you. Is it beneath them to or are they embarrassed?
