IN the beginning, all culture used picture writing, it began kind of like emoji and eventually become a full writing system that is needed. But its hard to learn, so, alphabet was invented. In most ancient society, formal document is written via picture writing, while informal document written via spelling, eventually, spelling replace picture writing. Today, only Chinese and Japanese still use picture writing(Japan use both spelling and picture writing) But these days with online symbols eg :) mean smile, do u think via online communication culture, a new form of picture writing is emerging?

Maybe you should learn Japanese and Chinese, they still use picture writing (Well in Japan, picture writing and spelling are both used, in Chinese, spelling is mostly just use by children, adults and formal document only use picture writing.) :)
