Best Historical Fiction Reads

Plausible, authentic and well-written historical fiction

Stories set in historical times give me more pleasure than reading about the world today. It's the sheer escapism which grabs me.

I enjoy books in settings drawn from history and, though the main characters are fictional, it's fascinating to find actual historical persons inside the pages..

Good authors can capture the manners and social conditions time presented in the story, and I just love those little period details. My historical fiction tastes cover interpretations of factual events, some science fantasy and detectives.

Lots and lots of detectives.

Ancient Roman Novels

Ancient Rome has beguiled me.

From the last days of the Republic to the barbarians at the gates and the flight to the East, I just can't get enough of the glory and gore of the Empire. Plodding through Roman history at school was at times tedious and I wish I could have seen some historical novels back then - that's why I'm a fan of the classic novel, I, Claudius.

I'm a fan of detective mysteries too and when I find them in Ancient Rome, I'm in heaven.

Some of the best fictional detectives do their sleuthing in togas. These four sleuths are from Ancient Roman times.

More Ancient Roman Detectives - of the Female Persuasion
I've said it before - some of the very best private detectives crack their cases while wearing togas. Or tunics. Sometimes in an ankle length tunic, a stola.

The Legend of King Arthur
