Best Series Of Vampire Books For Adults - Novels Featuring Vampires

Updated on July 22, 2014

Ten Great Vampire Books / Series For Your Reading List

If you are looking for something new to sink your teeth into in the world of vampire fiction then check out some of the best series in this genre below. A good set of vampire books really gives you something to sink your fangs into.

The Noble Dead Series

Novels By Barb & J. C. Hendee

If you are looking for the best in modern vampire fiction then look no further than the Noble Dead series by Barb and J. C. Hendee!

These books are a somewhat unique mix of gothic horror and high fantasy which has been described as a blend of The Lord Of The Rings and Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

A truly engrossing read, these books centre around the dhampir Magiere, a half-human half-vampire with one heck of a complex past and an increasingly complicated future.

The Noble Dead Series sends Magiere, her half-elven assassin partner Leesil, fay hound Chap and others on an increasingly engaging adventure to unravel the mysteries which enshroud their existences.

The Necroscope Series

Books By Brian Lumley

If you like your vampires viscious, bloody, gory and totally without any sense of remorse or empathy for the human cattle upon which they prey, then the Brian Lumley's Necroscope series is for you.

These books are something of a cross between a cold war espionage novel and horror fiction as they are based around the exploits of our hero the Necroscope Harry Keogh and the British E-Branch (a secret government agency which employs psychics of various abilities) and their battles against the Russian equivalent as well as various evils which walk the earth.

The Necroscope series is both complex and unique in its imaginative exploration of ESPionage and the ancient evil vampires which these espers reluctantly must face in their bid to protect humanity from a scourge which threatens to break out in a world of unbelievers.

The Vampire Chronicles

Novels By Anne Rice

Not your typical throat-ripping yarn, this is the series which revitalised the vampire genre back when the first book in the series Interview With The Vampire was released back in the mid 1970s.

Vampire World Trilogy

Novels By Brian Lumley

Continuing on from The Necroscope series, the Vampire World books by Brian Lumley delve deeper into the depraved world of the vampire lords and ladies he created, this time back in their own world beyond the gate.

The Vampire World trilogy consists of Blood Brothers, The Last Aerie and Bloodwars and is almost guaranteed to be some of the most inventive and horrific vampire fiction you will have read.

The Southern Vampire Mysteries

Vampire Novels By Charlaine Harris

Vampires are out of the closet (coffin?) and living among us in The Southern Vampire Mysteries. Our heroine Sookie Stackhouse is even dating one and loving the fact that for once, she can not read his mind which whilst a pain in most instances (especially relationshipwise) becomes highly useful in her night job of solving murders in the big city.

Placed somewhere between the Dresden Files and Kim Harrison's novels, The Southern Vampire Mysteries are fun and have recently been adapted into an excellent HBO TV series called True Blood.

Anita Blake Vampire Hunter Series

By Laurell K. Hamilton

Vampirism has been legalised in just one state which naturally makes it a haven for vampires amongst other things. So long as they abide by the rules, vampires are free to walk among us.

For those who do not, there's only one punishment - execution...and that's where Anita Blake steps in.

Fast paced, with a fair amount of sexual tension which in later books will firmly place this series as part of the supernatual erotica genre, these books are an entertaining vampire romp.

Buy The Blood Series By Tanya Huff On Amazon - Victoria Nelson Vampire Books

The Dresden Files

by Jim Butcher

Fast paced and action packed this is more the tale of a wizard in modern day Chicago than it is a straight out vampire novel but vampires feature so prevalently in the books this is a series which is definitely worth a mention or two.

The Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyers

The pinnacle of teen vampire fiction, Stephenie Meyer's Twilight Saga has sold over 50 million copies worldwide (as of 2008) and has a huge fanbase of loyal fans. The Twilight movie is due for a US theatrical release date of November 21st 2008 and looks set to be just as popular as the books. As young adult vampire fantasy novels go, Twilight seems to have revitalised the genre and it looks like teenager vampire books are seeing a resurgeance based upon its success.

Rachel Morgan Series

by Kim Harrison

Set in a world in which a vast portion of the human population was killed off by a mutation in genetically modifed tomatoes, Kim Harrison's Rachel Morgan series offers us an alternate human history where vampires, witches, shapeshifters and other creatures of legend finally reveal themselves as real and integrate with the remainder of human society.

Some Bonus Vampire Related Fiction

OK so these are not totally about vampires, in fact, they're a small part but some of the more interesting fantasy books I've read in a while are those by Russian author Sergei Lukyanenko. His series of books focusing upon the balance between good and evil as held in check by the various forces of the Nightwatch and Daywatch offer some highly original slants on some often tired old ideas. Check them out if you get a chance.

You have some great series lists here, most of which I have either read, reviewed or both! Anne Lyle does a beautiful series that is vampire and fantasy history combined: The Alchemist of Souls. You might want to add that to your list.

I'm really glad you've included the Sergei Lukyanenko books (although as you say they are not just about vampires). I discovered him when somebody lent me the Night Watch film, which was great, including the Russian accented dubbing, then I read the books and really loved them.

Slow in some parts. Real horror in some.

Love vampire novels. Love Anne Rice. Going to have to disagree about the Twilight series, though. As far as vampire literature goes, it falls short of the mark for me. Some good series you may want to check out though: the "dark" series by Christine Feehan. One of my fave vamp series, very adult though. This series is LONG, past 20 books, and another favorite: the black dagger brotherhood series by J.R. Ward. Great series, some very interesting things going on in this series, and she mixes humor into it, which is a lovely touch. also very adult. Great lens!!

For me, it's all about Anne Rice. Her books are so beautiful and meticulous in their details. 6,000 years of Vampire history? Bring it on! I re-read her Vampire Chronicles every few years. I love being in the midst of her world - like LOTR for vampire fans. Her books honestly taught me to see beauty in everything ('look with your vampire eyes').

@Positive_cake: Classics like Dracula or Carmilla are absolutely recommended! :) I wanted to make a list of vampire series books however, not stand-alones and Dracula only recently got an 'official' sequel however in Dracula The Un-Dead by Dacre Stoker as far as I know Bram Stoker never continued the story himself. For another really good standalone vampire novel I would also recommend Fevre Dream by George R. R. Martin.

Great list - I've been a lover of all thing vampire since about the age of 5! My Mum was a huge Hammer Horror fan and Christopher Lee just did it for me! Then in my teens when I discovered Anne Rice, I was smitten again! I do love the Twilight series, but I have to admit, I find this more a romance with vampires than a vampire novel. @anonymous: Hmm, I can't think of anything with "Morgana" as part of the title.

Thinking a little sideways, Meg Cabot's vampire books Overbite and umm, I forget the name of the other, both feature girls in red dresses on the cover.

Rachel Caine writes a series of novels called the Morganville Vampires.

Kim Harrison's series has Rachel Morgan as the main character.

Morgan Rice writes the Vampire Journals. Umm, can't think of any others off the top of my head.

Amazing lens! For eons now, I have been a huge fan of the Necroscope series ... and the rest of Brian Lumley books for that matter. It was so hard to find the books around here when they first came out ... long before the Internet explosion - I have fond memories of frantically trying to hunt down each of them with my mother (who was also a huge fan)!

[in reply to SudokuNut] Oh, and I guess Anita Blake has a very good chance of coming to either the movies or the theatre some time soon as the author claims on her own website she has recently "joined forces with a first class Writer, Producer and film studio."

  • sudokunut profile image

Mark Falco 9 years ago from Reno, Nevada

[in reply to JaguarJulie] As far as I know, Anne Rice had the first three books of the Vampire Chronicles turned into just two movies, the first was Interview With The Vampire with Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt whist the second and third books were sort of combined into Queen of the Damned which had elements of both (and it pretty much sucked).

Also, Twilight comes out at the movies sometime this week.

I'm pretty sure the others have yet to be made into full fledged movies although Tanya Huff's series made it onto TV as Blood Ties, Jim Butcher's too as the Dresden Files (got cancelled pretty early though) and Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mysteries also made it onto cable - that one is running on HBO right now.

There were a lot of rumors about a Necroscope movie which started around the time the first Lord Of The Rings was in production but that seems to have fallen to the wayside.
