Best Vampire Books

Updated on January 11, 2015

The Best Vampire Books in My Opinion.........

I feel like Twilight, Vampire Diaries, and other vampire themed paranormal fiction have given people the wrong impression of vampires. Don't get me wrong it's fine if you like those, but in my opinion those are not real vampires. Yes I know vampires are a fictional creation, but they should be scary, and want to tear your throat out and drink your blood. They do not want to be your lover or your friend. So I figured I would make my reading suggestion list for people who think the same. These are my scary suggestions, and some honorable mentions to some that border on romance type too.

Scary Vampire Books

These vamps do not sparkle.....

Dracula - You cannot have a list of best vampire books without mentioning Dracula by Bram Stoker. I remember reading this as a young teen, and thinking of how scary , and mysterious it was. That's why I have to say that it is a must read for any fan of the genre.

The Laura Caxton Series - This five book series, which has a number theme for every book stars your not the average heroine, of Laura Caxton. She is a bad ass State Trooper turned vampire hunter. I like how the author uses certain key elements to really develop this character, such as a minor detail of her being a lesbian, but he just mentions it matter of factly. This combined with the thrilling scenes involving a mastermind villain in Justinia Malvern make for an epic story. I loved this series, and could not get enough. For more info please check out my other lens about this author found here -

Poppy Z. Brite's Lost Souls - This was another book that I fell in love with as a teen. A different type of wampyre, as they are born and not made. Also some survive on blood while others do not. This author is a master of this genre, and I only wished that she had written more books. She has collections of short stories by multiple authors, but that is it for all I know.

Stephen King's Salem's Lot - Another novel that I had read as a teen, and one that I absolutely loved. The Town of Jerusalem's Lot has been invaded, but they residents are unaware until it is too late. Classic King at his best.

30 Days of Night series - Although this is not a traditional novel, as it is a graphic novel that does not make this any less great, and it is a truly worthy mention in this list. I loved the graphic violence, and sheer monstrosity of these creatures that seek to destroy a town in 30 days of pure nite terror. A creature that has a mouth full of teeth like a shark....if you don't find that terrifying than I don't know what to tell you. There are a number of graphic novels in this series by Steve Niles.

What do you think?

Do you think vampires should be scary, sexy or both?

The very last book in the Sookie Stackhouse series, and one that has created quite the controversy. This was definitely worth reading.

Honorable Mentions

These books are scary, but sexy at the same time....

Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles - I have to admit that I was so into these books as a teen, but they were of the few vamp books that I was exposed to. They are a tad bit romantic than really dangerous, but still worthy of mentioning as being good books for this list. There are at least eleven books in this series, and at least two of them cross over with her Mayfair Witches series.

Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse Series (True Blood) - I can see why HBO opted to make this book series into a show. The starting books in this series are very strong and will make you want more. Deadly and sexy at the same time this series is great for men and women alike. Although I have to admit that after the 5th book in the series they get a little silly/sappy, and in my opinion not very enjoyable. There has been talk about the finishing book in the series being a huge fan letdown.

Some of the books mentioned above on Amazon
