Books about Cats for Kids

Updated on February 1, 2015

Children's Cat Books and Stories

Looking for books about cats for your young feline fancier? Toddlers will love hearing you read about kitties to them, while early readers and older kids will themselves eagerly read stories, and nonfiction books for kids with facts about cats in them.

You'll find both fiction nonfiction here, conveniently organized by reading level. Along with a great selection of books, there are a few other things that will interest kids: a couple of amusing videos, and a few specially selected toys and games.

I'm a cat lover, too. At left is a photo of my own very spoiled kitty, whose name is Walker, Florida Feline. Isn't he beautiful?

Bonus - some links to several free downloadable and printable activity pages. Hope you find just what you're looking for right here!

Books about Cats and Kittens - for Your Very Young Ones

Books - and lots of them - are an absolute essential for young children. And the earlier they have books of their own, the better. If your child or baby seems captivated by kittens, then you know what kind of books to get for them. Just do it. It's that simple.

For Early Readers

Non Fiction for Young Children - Early Readers for Learning About Cats and Kittens

At about age four and onward, kids are really beginning to be curious about an expanding range of topics. One of the things that really fascinates most young children is animals. Start with animals they see a lot, and are familiar with - like cats and kittens.

How to Talk to Your Cat
How to Talk to Your Cat

Here's a fun one! For first Grade and up

Learn about your cat - what he or she is saying with tail, whisker, ear, and eye, movements.

Tail Tips - Cats Talk with Their Tails

Do you sometimes get the feeling that your cat understands you better than you understand him? (or her) It could be true! Cats are keen observers, and easily sense mood changes or anxiety in their owners. They also communicate with us in a number of ways... but we don't always understand exactly what they are saying!

One of the ways the communicate is with their tails.

For example, the kitty's tail in the following picture tells us he or she is approachable at the moment.

For a dozen different tail tips about what the different positions of a cat's tail means, see Cats Talk with Their Tails

Tales and Stories - Feline Fiction for Young Readers

To get a kid reading, make sure they have books at and just above their reading level on topics that interest them. These fun stories featuring cats may be just the thing for the kid who has a kitty ... or would like to have one.

The Cat in the Hat

Ages 5 and up

No child's library would be complete without a copy of The Cat in the Hat, now, would it?

Bad for Cats!

Please do NOT share your chocolate with your cat. The cat won't appreciate it, anyway, as they can't taste sweet things!

More importantly, chocolate is very harmful to cats, and can make them seriously ill.

So Many Cats! - Beatrice Schenk De Regniers / Ellen Weis Goldstrom

I had forgotten about this wonderful story, until someone who had visited this page reminded me of it. It's a marvelous book, and shouldn't be forgotten! My bad.

Now, I've added it here, and I hope you'll remember to add it to your child's library, too.

This is an old favorite that children just love. I had forgotten all about it, until a reader reminded me of it. It shouldn't be forgotten, as kids really do love this book about cats!

Some Random Facts about Cats

Cats learn better when you praise and reward them for good behavior. They do NOT learn well by being scolded or punished, as they simply don't understand the concept of punishment.

If a cat's tail makes a small quivering movement when he looks at you, it means he likes you.

Indoor cats that are well cared for, and get a lot of human attention, can live 10 years (or more) longer than outdoor cats.

Do not ignore your cat. They love being talked to, touched, and gently played with. But, if you're petting kitty, and her tail starts thrashing or jerking, she's had enough - time to stop!

Cats can run up to 30 miles an hour, and jump five times higher than their tail is long.

Surprisingly. Maine is one of the few states that has an official state cat. Not so surprisingly, it's the Maine Coon Cat, which is native to the state.

On an average, cats have about 24 whiskers - a dozen on each side.

Felines' mouths are missing the type of taste buds that let them taste sweet things.

Great! I'd add Thomasina and Jennie (also published as The Aboanded), both by Paul Gallico. His writing influences my own when writing about cats and other animals. Cats and books are such a natural fit. When I had a used bookshop we fostered cats from the local shelter and found homes for over 50 over the years. Wish more businesses would foster animals!

I think this is great -- books about cats for kids. It's wonderful to teach children to love animals early on. (BTW -- both my cats lived to 18 years old )
