The Bottlenose Dolphin
Flipper Was Played by Bottlenose Dolphins
When most of us hear the word "dolphin," we tend to think of one particular species of marine mammal - the bottlenose.
The star of the 1960s TV show, Flipper, was a Bottlenose dolphin. Actually, there was a group of them who played the part of Flipper - five females and one male. The male was the one who did Flipper's famous 'tailwalk.'
You can see them in most marine aquariums, and if you participate in a 'dolphin swim,' it's likely you'll be swimming with the bottlenose variety.
If you are lucky, you can see them in the wild. While not a daily occurrence, we do occasionally spot them swimming along in the brackish river near our home, and it's always a thrill when we do.

Bow-Riding A Favorite Dolphin Activity
Dolphins like to engage in bow-riding, or surfing along ahead of a boat in the wave made by the boat's bow.
No one knows for sure why they do it, but some people think it is to swim faster with less effort, while others think they are just playing.
Most all species have been observed doing it. Some observers say the Commerson's Dolphins show a preference for faster vessels. Maybe they are training for the marine olympics!
The folks on the boat in this video sure got an unexpected thrill when a bow riding session began. Lucky for us, someone had their camera along. Watch it - you'll be amazed!

The Commerson's Dolphin
The beautiful Commerson's Dolphin are a striking black and white. They have a black head, dorsal fin, and fluke, with a white throat and body. They live in cold, shallow waters, off the southern coast of South America, and in the southern part of the Indian Ocean.
On a voyage around the world, in 1767, French naturalist Philibert Commerson saw them swimming in the Straights of Magellan, and wrote about them. They are named after him.
Here's something interesting: They like to swim upside down!

Although it's rated for children up through the fifth grade, there is no reason a child auear or two older might not enjoy it, too.
The Commerson's Dolphin - Black and White and Upside Down
- Commerson's are also sometimes called the Panda, Skunk, or Piebald Dolphin, because of the pattern of their black and white markings.
- They are one of the smaller dolphin species, growing to only around 5 feet long.
- You can tell the males and females apart by the shape of the black mark on their tummy. It's shaped like a teardrop for the males, but more rounded for the females.
- The Commerson's Dolphins of South America have the strictly defined black and white markings, which appear completely by the age of one year. The ones in the Indian Ocean also have gray on them.
- If you like acrobatics, just watch a pod of Commerson's. In addition to swimming upside-down, they also like to spin, twirl, and leap out of the water.
