Books as Christmas Gifts

Updated on December 2, 2014

Books as Presents

We all read books at some stage and many are avid readers. They are always welcome in most cases and a good book is worth keeping for years on a shelf or elsewhere where it might be read again and again by several members of the family.

My library is reasonably small by comparison with those who relish books like nothing else. But it contains many books used in my research and over the years a lot have been given to me by thoughtful members of the family. There is one thing that defines my character and that is to never throw a book away. If one enters the house then it is doomed to stay.

What Constitues a Good Book

Is it an author, publisher or popularity

There are books and there are books. Some I would never read because they are difficult to get one's mind around. The things I look for in a book are basic elements.

First the genre is the most important thing then; What are they saying? How well do the authors express themselves? Is the information of value to me? Is it well illustrated and do the details paint great pictures and exiting images in the mind? Is it easy to follow and have a purpose? These are just some of the criteria used by me for when deciding on what to read.

How To Books

Without a doubt these are the most widely read of all. A good descriptive journal or magazine with pictures to help you follow the advice is worth it's weight in gold for the reader trying to solve a problem. But then there are the books that make you fall asleep. These are usually the heavy text books that one reads for a university degree or to get some knowledge about something outside of his or her normal activity.

Some. however, can really make you sit up and take notice. They are the ones where new information is given that is exactly the thing you need to know. When I was researching the origin of religion and language there were books galore in front of me and I read some 30 or more a day. That is because I am a speed reader and only target those bits that I needed for my research.

Books are great gifts for any occasion. Children should be encouraged to read even little by little and eventually they will develop the interest to read.

We always include books as gifts to children every Christmas.
